Encore Black Powder Pistol
« on: October 11, 2006, 07:36:52 AM »
Hey Guys,
Why did they stop selling the  Encore Black Powder pistol barrel? I have experience with the 209 x 50 long gun, but thought it would be fun to mess around with the pistol. I saw last fall that they quit selling them...at least here in Minnesota. So what's the scoop on them? Anybody shot one? I've seen a couple used ones for sale and thought I better ask somebody that knows more about it. Thanks! Larry

Some states (like Wisconsin) don't allow them for hunting.  I expect if there are many states like us then the demand was down and they stopped selling them.  But there may be another reason.  Stay tuned.

I talked with the DNR (here in Minnesota) this morning just to find out if they were legal for hunting. The person I talked to said that they were. It could be like you said that maybe there wasn't enough demand for them. I DK. I think it still maybe kind of fun to have one just to shoot. It'd be nice to know how they shoot before I actually bought one though.

I have a .54 Scout pistol.  I don't know when TC stopped maling them.  It is a powerful thumper.  I have used two 50 grain Pyrodex pellets and a Great Plains bullet and can hardly hold on to it.  It is quite a bit of fun with 40 grains loose pyrodex and a patched round ball.  I have no doubt with the bullet I could take a deer at a reasonable range (under 50 yards).  I wonder how much of the 100 grains of P are actually consumed in the short barrel.

Probably not a heck of a lot. With a barrel that short I bet it doesn't burn much over half of it.

I am sure it wouldn't burn much if it were loose powder.  The pellets burning from the middle may allow more to burn, but I don't really know.  What I do know is that it is a handfull.

I think you can still get them made trough fox ridge outfitters. I ahve a 15" 209x50 and it is a lot of fun to shoot. I ahve taken several deer with it and it will kill them jsut fine

I am using 90 grs of goex black powder under a lightfiels alpha gold 300
I also use barns 250 bullets. they for me shoot almost to the same place as the alpha gold 300 do with the 90 grs of powder

I like to try and keep all my shots to under 40 yards.
