Best for Removing Crimps from .223 Brass
« on: October 11, 2006, 10:01:00 AM »
Just started reloading for my .223.  Bought the Bushmaster Varminter.  Fun!!!  Anyway, just wondering what worked best for popping out primers and removing the crimps.  This is my first experience with  reloading military rounds.  I was told that the pin on my RCBS die would probably break in tme.  Does any body have any suggestions?

depriming with a standard die is usually no problem. The best tool ive found for swading out the crimps is the one dillon sells.

lee and I believe others make a depriming die only.they are more heavy duty.I like the lee as if you run into a berdan primed case or a small rock stuck in the bottom of the case..the decapping rod just pushes up through the top and you can readjust it.the dillion works great. But a faster method is using a sinclair crimp remove, others also make a cutting tool.just chuck it up in the drill and put the drill in a vise and start putting the primer pocket onto the tool.is a cutting tool and with slight pressure removes the crimp by cutting the brass at the edge of the primer pocket.not much needs to be removed.Hope this helps and enjoy your new hobby..

I have the RCBS swager for primer pockets and it works good.

Not the fastest but good.

Dittos on that, I have their Rapid Swage (tm) and I love it. I'll also heartily recommed their press mounted case trimmer.

I've used a lot of 223, 308 and 30-06 military cases. To de-prime, I just run them thru a full length sizing die. For the primer pockets, I make a couple quick turns with my de-burring tool. Been doing it for a lot of years without a problem. Sometimes we create our own problems.
