Marlin Cowboy .22 LR vs. Marlin Texan .22 LR

Dear Folks,

   Has anyone shot both of these levers, and do you have any opinions one way or another. The Cowboy model has a 24 inch barrel, the Texan has a 20 inch tapered barrel. 

    Marlin only made these for a couple of years, so they must have been a marketing bust.  I think I can tell you why.  What idiot in marketing thought up the great idea of engraving, in large block print, on the beautiful octagonal barrels, the words "COWBOY MODEL" and "TEXAN MODEL."    Nobody wants  a classic looking rifle that says "COWBOY" or "TEXAN" on it, unless you are a 9 year old boy with a red dimestore cowboy hat. 

   Marlin went out of its way to design these beautiful, historic, classic looking rifles, and then ruined them with these moronic engravings.    I'm just looking for a tin can shooter, and trying to decide between one of these two Marlins, or an original 1892 Marlin.

Hi Big Paulie -

Not directly related to your inquiry re: Marlin .22's, but I once owned the Marlin 336 Texan in 30/30.  Was dumb enough to sell it - about as nice a little rifle as I'd ever owned.  As I remember, I bought it from a pawn shop for $200, shot a nice buck with it that fall, and then sold it come tax time.  Would you mind stepping over here and kicking me in the CAN?!?  NIce short barrel - shot strighter then hell - fun in the brush.  Heck, why not get the .22 AND the 30/30 Texan?  You'd have matching guns - one's hole would be just a little bigger(don't go there, brother!)>

Oh well, guess I'd say the .22 Texan would be the rifle to get, just wanted to cry/whine in public a bit.  Why do we ever sell guns - still trying to learn...

BigPaulie, I think it's obvious by your post what your choice should be. Get an original 1892.

You don't want Cowboy or Texan stamped on your rifle so get an original.

I paid $495 for my 1897 CB. I already had the red dimestore cowboy hat.

I hope you enjoy your 1892 as much as I enjoy my 1897 and my red dimestore cowboy hat.
