How many tree squirrels have you killed with your pardner .410? What was your longest shot with a clean kill. ;)

If you are killing squirrels with your 410 i sure would like to know what you are useing for ammo. I can't kill one with mine. Switched to my 20 ga. and got three yesterday.

2 1/2" Remington #6s works just fine for me.  Now, I wont lie to you, you have to be patient and aim your shots like you would with a .22 rifle.   Also, If you are using 3" shells you are hurting yourself.  Most of us have found that 3" shells shoot a "doughnut" pattern in our NEF .410s.   Good luck.

     Brett,
I am shooting 3" shells. You sure are right. The pattern looks like a doughnut. I'll have to give the 2 1/2" shells a try.
          Thanks very much,

A few day's ago I was shooting the Remington #6 game Loads in my pardner .410 and the patterns were so dismal that I believe i could have thrown them by hand and got a tighter pattern. I swithched to the Remington #7 1/2 shot 3" shells and it patterned pretty nicely. ;D

One thing that we used to do to these(and other .410's)is open the chokes up to a tight modified.  Made the little guns perform much better on game.  It helps even out the patterns and gives you something bigger than a 50 cent piece to him a animal with.
Personally I went with a 28 ga and never looked back.  I was looking at youth .410's today with my daughter.  If we weren't going to Disney in a week she would have one right now.  Maybe she'll have to wait til Christmas.  She's always after me casue her brother, age 7, has three guns, and she, age 6, only has 2.  Man I love my kids! ;D

That's a rare bird. I don't think I have ever personally seen a .410 in anything but full choke.

I think I may have seen a Winchester Model 42 with a modified choke.

Sorry about that guys. The paper work that came with the gun says it is modified. The barrel is stamped full. Tried some 2 1/2 #6 shot today. Doesn't look like there will be any problems killing squirrels with them.
       Thanks for the help,

Just remember your giving up some boom whem using a 2 1/2 in shell. in my NEF .410 I only use 2 1/2 in. shells but I had my Mossberg 500 pump opened up to a light mod and the forcing cone reworked and the barrel burhished and let me tell you it made a BIG differents in my shooting. Nnow I can shoot the bigger 11/16 loads without the donut holes in the pattern. I even took this gun dove hunting this year and limted out with it.  With a little work the .410 can be a great hunting gun.

My Partner 410 made a nice patern at 25yds with #6 shot 21/2" shells. I have some 71/2 shot in 3" shells I'll have to try.

#7 1/2 shot is awfully small. Squirrels can be pretty tough critters I would not be confident that #7 1/2 shot would anchor them consistently.  Besides it would be an awful chore trying to eat a squirrel well peppered with #7 1/2 shot.   :P

Brett,
Those 7 1/2 shot shells in 410 caliber are for trap. My #6  2 1/2" shells I'd use for Squirrels.
