I have seen a very few like you mentioned but seems to be an exception. Seems to be more common in Fox.

An old story which I have heard repeated over the years is that a Fox would get a piece of tree bark or corn silk in its mouth then very slowly back into a body of water till the tip of the nose was the only thing showing. The Fox would then release the bard and quickly vacate the area. The witness would then approach the piece of bark or silk and claim that it was teaming with lice and other vermin. I have never witnessed such a thing but find it believable due to the other antics that this woodland wizard uses to evade man and dog.

The Author of my 1940's vintage Varmint & Crow hunters bible claims to have shot a groundhog once in the dead of winter. He said that it was no wonder that it couldnt hibernate as it was near bald with many sores due to being full of vermin.

IMO This all relates to mange and the sorce of it. Everyone has heard the terms Mangy Varmint or
Flea bitten varmint as just another way of putting it.

We often se coyotes that look ‘like they have been rode hard and put up wet’ and also see those that look like they have been prepped for a dog show.  Don’t know what makes the difference in them.  If you see these in the spring or early summer they are probably just blowing their winter coats.  If I didn’t brush some of my dogs they would also look like this also.

I understand the rode hard and put up wet look but the last one I seen(10-10-06) was totally bald . it was about 50 to 60 yards away so couldnt see a lot of detail but seen enough to know there was no hair. seen an article in OL magazine about coyotes in this condition in TX last year(I think) I figured something like this would run it's course in less time than this. or maybe just a slow spreading....good hunting....Bill

Gentlemen.

Due to the extra dry and warm winter it doesn't surprise me that this would occur more often than not. This will sure knock the hide trade in the head.

Glanceblamm.

Nothing would surprise me about the wiley fox and some of his antics, Actually i think they are akin to the chimpanzee. I have on many occasions  sat and watched fox go about their daily activities and marvel at some of the things they do,, Better than the movies.... Take care Fellers........Joe..........

the bald and partially bald yotes are very common here in sw MO. in fact it seems more common now right in my area to see a yote with some mange than without.when i was a kid in late 70's early 80's and fur prices were high i never ever saw a bald yote. the guys here used to hunt them with dogs also in addition to callin and trapping but almost all yote hunting or trapping has died out compared to the scale it once was practiced on.funny thing bout those bald yotes is that they seem to hang around almost asking to be delivered from their misery.
