.308 and 125gr to 130 gr bullets
« on: October 14, 2006, 04:41:15 AM »
Has anyone tried 125 gr to 130 gr bullets in a .308?  What was the result as to velocity and accuracy?  Is there much to be gained over a 150 grn?  The Barnes TSX in a 130 grn has me thinking.   My wife calls this the dangerous stage!  Thanks  buckfever

While the 150gr.  bullet is the way I go in the 308, I have played with the 125gr and 130gr. bullets.  I have used 4064 and 4895 with these bullets.  Accuracy was plus or minus 1 inch in a old mossberg bolt action and in a beat up old converted military rifle, but the vel. was not there.  I was getting vel. about like I get with the 150gr.  bullets.  Since I really like the 150gr. bullets I did not keep working up the velocity, even though you could.  I've even loaded some 110gr. bullets but never got the accuracy, 2 inch or a little less with this bullet.  Handload some and see what you get.

if yu want to try the light bullets, try the nosler 125 with the green tip. they work well in my 06 as far as accuracy but im more sold on the 150 grn horn for killin power.

Maybe she was right. Sounds to me like a good excuse to buy a new rifle, one she can shoot of course! 8) You could get a 26, 27 or 28 cal rifle and shoot the same class bullets and they would be better constructed and have better basistic qualities. The only bullet that would hold together in 30 cal as well as the others, might well be only the 130gr TSX, but even it would be no match balistically for the smaller dia bullets. A 260Rem will push a 125gr Nosler Partition somewhere around 2900fps, + or -. The 308 will push a 130gr bullet a bit over 3000fps + or -, thats not a partition either. I would guess the same velocities could be reached with the 130 TSX and then you'd have a tuff bullet, but, the B.C. and S.D. of the 30cal bullet falls way off. Although it would probally penetrate as well, it wouldn't fly as flat! And I don't know what TSX's go for but I'd wager they are more expensive than standard cup and core bullets and the big savings could go toward another new pair of shoes for her or maybe a new carpet. I bought a new Rem 788 years ago that cost me just over $800 after I thru in the new couch she wanted. The 788 new was $89 at that time! Don't go near a furniture store! :o

Yes, I think you have a perfectly good case for a new rifle! ;D

I loaded 130 grain Hornady Spire points last year, for my wife to use in her 308!
I did this in hopes of reducing recoil a little bit!
She got her buck (3-point) at about 120 yards and there was about a 3-4 inch hole in the off-side of the rib cage!
Also, lots of bloodshot when we skinned him out!

The remainder of the 130's are being pulled this evening and will be replaced with 150's
Of course the powder charge will be changed also!

I load the 125gr nosler ect for my .308 and use them for PD hunting.they have proved to be very accurate, and they blow those little devils up as if some one shoved a case of dynomite up their little butt's.as far as velocity.they are faster then the onefifty's.and seem to get to their mark very fast with a more flatter trajectory then heavier bullets.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

Don, thanks for confirming the female surcharge on all firearms and out of state hunting trips.  I didin't realize this was part of the pricing module for future purchases.  When quoting prices in the future I may have to include an astrisk whick denotes female surchage included in price.  I have been married for 36 years to the same woman and I finally am starting to accept things that didn't seem to make sense before.  Come to think of it I am going on a Moose hunt to Ontario next year and my current pricing does not have the FSC* in it.  I will have to get on that right away!     Buckfever
