Wow!  This is some site!  Been looking around for options.
As far as the trapping, I have played on and off since 1966.  Last few years, the traps have not seen much use.  Now one of my employees has found my stash of traps and is prodding me to show him a few things.  Well, I guess I'll have to come out of retirement to get him going.  Not that I'll take any personal pleasure in it of course!

well in my younger days i began trapping at the age of 8 and trapped till i was 18.  just rats mind you.  well 4 yrs ago i got the bug back and have been at it the past 4 yrs.  ive tried to expand my knowlege but it is a slow learning curv.  i've seem to have taken a liking to beaver trapping after taking my first 3 last season.

well about the same as chub i started with my dad at 8 years old we traped rats mink coon beaver and some fox. as he aged i went about things on my own and targeted mainly rats beaver and mink. at about age 16 i found a new type of fur to pursue, than last yaer at 32 and a boy of my own i got the itch again we hit things pretty hard, for our first year back at it. we managed to take our first mink (together) , our first coyote ever, also our first 2 gray fox ever, we also took several beaver, coon, & rats. anyway i sure am glad my dad got me started and i hope some day my boy will have the same feeling. PS GREAT FORUM.

Why Newty ol boy you is a young pup yet.... ;)   Remember the first time you set a foot hold?   I do! I had bicycled into town five miles and  bought 2 nbr one victor longsprings new for 50 cents each.  I set them for was for a norway rat.  My mother   woke me up  saying something is squealing  outside, maybe something in your trap?   Well i  sauntered outside and low and behold i had a huge norway rat by the privates!!!!!!!!!!!!! by the testicles to be exact!   Ouch, even at that tender age i could feel the rats   predicament.  Well to make a long story short i made a good rat out of him.  The  rat was killing   young rabbits i was raising at the time.   What was your experience Newt?

I trapped my first rat when I was 8 and I'm 60 now.  One of my dad's best friends trapped a local river part-time and I went with him one time and watched.  He told me if I started trapping and caught any rats he'd skin the 1st one and I'd have to do the rest.  That's exactly how it worked and I sold my first rats to Sears & Roebuck through the mail.

Now that I'm retired, I trap 5 months of the year which makes up for those almost-closed "windows-of-opprotunity" during my working career. ;)

I started in 1972. I trapped rats on a salt marsh through the 80s. I left it alone for a time, but never felt like I was out of it, always noticing sign and checking for sets while fishing and hunting. I started up again in 1995 or so. Now I do a little bit of everything rats, mink ( my favorite), beaver, fox and coon. I got my sons to do some also, I think a good price on rats will encourage more new trappers. shotgunner

I caught my first critter in the year 1943. At that time I was 11 yrs. old.  It was a spotted skunk taken in our chicken house. The war was on and there were no new traps. Used ones were expensive and fur prices were amazing for a kid trapper back then.
