Picked up my 1895 Cowboy today.

I had posted a question previously regarding the Marble tang sight but got no response. I decided to install a Williams FP receiver sight instead. I wont get out to shoot it until next weekend. I'm going to load up some Hornady 350's with H-4198 using a load that shot great in my old cowboy. I wont let this rifle get away like I did the previous one. Hopefully I will have everything figured out in time to hunt elk in November. This rifle was slightly used and I only paid $525.00 for it. Now I just need to find a decent 336 Cowboy 30-30 to go with it.

How do you like the feel of the cowboy ?I  handled one when they first came out and wasn't to pleased with it i thought the front forend was to thin , but maybe that was because i was used to the wider forend on the 1895 ss maybe its something one could get used to. Good luck with it  and have you seen the 350 grain swift a frames they have for the 45/70. Expensive but should be great on elk

I like the slim forearm of the cowboy. To me, this rifle handles and balances like a fine shotgun. The best offhand shooting that I have ever done was with my first 1895 cb. I always carry my shooting sticks though just in case. I like the looks of the Swift bullet but very expensive. I have over 500 of the Hornady 350's and those should work for deer, black bears, and elk here in Idaho. If I save up enough money for a bison hunt, I might try the Swift bullets.

Good deal. I know what your saying about balance. I really like the way mine feels. I can carry the gun by the forearm, which I like the slim unchecked forearm, and the gun balances nicely. Also seems to hang on target nice. As far as them being long and cumbersome, it's still shorter than most bolt guns with 22" barrels. I put the same sight on mine. Good sight and seems to go with the gun.

I'm really thinking of getting one of these guns. I know the woodchucks will be thrilled to see it this spring.

I was kinda thinking the same thing.  My .204 has worked on Wisconsin chucks in the past.  And they do enough yard damage.  Sounds like these could really tear things up!

The whistlepigs here in Idaho aren't that big but they are ferocious. It's comforting to know that this rifle can hold up to ten rounds of 45-70 in case I'm charged by one. A 10-22 with a 30 round magazine will work in a pinch but the muzzle flash and boom of the 45-70 has more of a psycological effect.

I picked up my 1895CB about 7 weeks ago and a Marlin 336 last week. Looking to put a Williams reciever on also, but having problems locating one for the CB. Have only taken it out to the range thus far. Hoping to get on the next hog hunt here in South Texas.

No such thing as too much gun. I'm really wanting a .45-70 lever gun, and I've found a way to justify getting it You never know when one of those woodchucks might charge.

ggeilman, check Brownells or Midway. It is the Williams FP336. It mounts in the two rear scope mount holes on top of the receiver. I ordered mine with the target knobs. It is a great sight for hunting or target shooting.
