Wolves

Was down in the Anderson area last weekend, talked to some people that had been hunting in the Wood River area during the Moose season.  These folks said they had seen a large pack of wolves running on the east side of the Wood River.  They counted 22 animals in the pack.  At first I thought they were streatching it a little, 22 wolves.  This afternoon I was talking to a retired biologist who said it was entirely possiable, he had counted more than 30 animals in several packs back when he was working for the state.  Looks like Friends Of Animals are getting their wish, (More wolves than we know what to do with).

My neighbor has a novel idea.  No one should be issued Moose permits till they bring in five wolf pelts.  Sounds good to me.  Any thoughts on this?

I think it is a shame that the wolves are being pushed from their natual habitat.  We should re-introduce them back into Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau.  It should help reduce the number of stray cats, dogs, rabbbits and other non-native species in those areas.  Might just make the animal rights activitests rethink their concerns once all the game in those areas is depleated.

Uh, DAVE!!  The animal rights wackos WANT the wolves to deplete the herds in order to bring hunting to a halt! >:(

Dave:  When a cayote grabbed a kid off the bike trail on Elmendorf, no one noticed.  It did make the paper, and caused the Base Commander to ask questions.  But the answer was "Just a cayote doing what cayotes do, must have thought the kid was running away from it and gave chase".  In other words it was the kids fault.  Then it was forgotten about.  That was in 95 or 96, now no one remembers about it.

A couple of years back a wolf actually grabber a dog off of a lease while someone was walking the dog. Wolvess have a simplier mind than we do. 
Hungry, see food, eat food.  Pretty simple.  Coyotes are as bad as wolves. 

Problem is they are so smart.  We had a moose kill going up on the Yukon River.  We could approach and get to 200 yards of the kill on the opposite bank of an adjoining stream, out-of-site and down wind.  Never did see a wolf on the kill site.  Of course when we checked the snares, the wolves had been there eating again.  Smart buggers.

As a solution to the ever rising wolf population I have just started stringing out 25 Alaskan #9s and usually set a couple 100 snares or more.
