Many leaving soon, some tips and reminders
« on: April 16, 2003, 03:13:58 AM »
I'm sure you're all getting excited about the upcoming trip. A few things off the top of my head for you to remember.

Bring a change of clothes on the plane with you. It's a long flight to sit is soiled clothing from something spilling on you.

Bring your bathroom "kit' as well. It's refreshing to brush your teeth, wash up and shave( electric only, no razors!) before you get off the plane.

Having some earplugs will quiet the jet engine noise a bit for more sound sleep on the plane.

Pack some chapstick and sunscreen for the time in back of the open truck, along with sunglasses that have a string to hold them around your neck when you take them off.

South Africa Air has a huge personal entertainment center at each seat for each passanger. Plenty of movies Current TV shows, games and documentaries are all available to every passanger on thier own screen with their own channel selector. You may want to bring a book though, reading helps me to get sleepy sometimes. Ambien will be a good friend for you too, see the doctor before you leave!

Store your carry on bag into the over head even if you want to get things from it later. The leg room will be critical to you on the flight. Don't use the area under the seat in front of you for your carry on! Once the over heads fill you will be stuck with it under the seat.

Bring some lifesavers or unwrapped hard candy. Don't use the stuff with the individual cello wrap! Africa is dry and it seems you always have an itchy throat, or is that scratchy throat? ...... Anyhow the need to clear your pipes or cough always comes up when near game.  Make sure you have a way of covering or remove your bright stainless steel watch band. I have seen a fellow hunter from some distance when he was moving his arm and the watch band or face reflected light right at me. A wrist sweat band is good to cover the watch. I use one every year.  If you have a day pack or fanny pack make certain you don't have any velcro on it!  I also wrap the zipper tabs with rubber bands to prevent their "jingle" when walking and stalking game.

Don't put off shooting game the first day or few hours of the trip. You may think because you have a ten day hunt and might find a better animal you should wait. Take what is available and what the PH suggests is a good trophy. You will have a better end of the trip having three stress free days to shoot one animal then one stress filled day to try and shoot three! You never know what's around the next bush in Africa, so take advantage of each opportunity

Above all else don't let the trip turn into a minimum size trophy collection event. Have some fun, smell the air, hear the sounds, learn the tracks and habits of the game and the local people. It's a vacation for goodness sakes not a race or a contest.

Make gun safety your 100% highest priority on this trip, you will have a tool in your hands that can completely remove the head of your PH with a single mistake!

Now go practice some free hand shooting at 75 yards for the remaining time before you leave. Good luck and enjoy the experience!
