trouble with a T/C 460 S &W barrel
« on: October 15, 2006, 01:48:41 PM »
Maybe someone can help me.  I have a 15", T/C , 460 SS barrel that won't shoot any groups at all.  Presently its topped with a Redfield 3 ring mount and Bushnell 2-7 trophey scope.  I've had a 2X Burris on it also, same results.  I put both scopes on a different handgun, (.44 SRH ) they shot great.  The barrel seems rough on the inside, almost like lath marks.  I have 3 other barrels, none of which have such marks.  I had the same results with 454 ammo.   Disgusted, I called Thompson Center, they were very courtious, told me to send it to them, less scopes, etc.  I recieved my barrel back a couple of weeks later with a note....shot 1 1/2 groups at 100 yds with Corbon ammo.  Thats all it said.   After pricing Corbon ammo, presently at 55 to 60 bucks for 20....I'm blue collar, can't afford that !  Has anyone else had problems with this 460 T/C barrel ?  Any help would be appreciated.

I have one, shoots 1" groups at 50 yards, with Corbon 45's and 454's. And shoots 1" groups with the 460, only 8" lower at 50 than the other rounds..........

Sounds like you may have to reload your own to get the results you want.  If Corbon gets that good a group then I am sure you can work up a load that will work as well.  It is not uncommon to have to feed a barrel what it wants to get it to work well.

Thanks for the feed back,............... poncaguy, Have you ever used Hornaday 460's ?   If so, how did it grp for you ?  Keith, I agree I could probably find something it likes better with mixing my own,  but surely I should be able to get it to group 2-3 inches at 50 yds.  Your probably thinking I'm not doing my part.....I put my 44 barrel back on, was shooting 2 inch groups at 50 yards, it 's topped with a red-dot.   In my post I mentioned the lath marks,  anyone ever see this...should I be able to see it ?  Thanks again .

I have had the same problem. I sent mine back when i talked to T/C they said corbonn 180gr. I went threw 100rds of Honaday 200 SST. I hope to get it back soon i will try the corbond and then start reloading. I want more than 100yds accy. If that is all that i can expect I will go back to my MAX And Sell the 460. Most of my shots are 50 to 100yds. I want to drop my deer not hitt it 6inch high and look for it. S&W does not have this problem with thier revolvers why does T/C?

Every gun is different.  We have four 700BDL Remingtons in the family, all 7MM08.  Each one performs best with a different load.  It takes some time and work to find it.  If you have the time I know you will find what your 460 likes.

Thanks for the input,  guess I'll have to break down and buy a box of Corbon and see how it performs.  I'm not ready to buy dies and start reloading untill I see if the barrel has any potental.  I'm just having a real mental thing on spending almost 3 bucks a pop for ammo.  Thanks again ...................
