I am planning to buy a red dot scope for my Ruger SBH Hunter in the next month and was wonder which ones to look at. I have seen 2 styles a holographic type and a standard scope type and even some with multipull rectical options on a single scope. Does anyone have any suggestions or warnings for me that could help narrow my search?

You will need to find one that fits your rings. 1" tube or you will have to get the 30mm rings. THe other option is to get the weaver adaptor plate. If you use the rings supplied with the gun you must make sure that the turret or battery pack parts fit within the ring span. Keep us p[osted

I just bought a Leupold-Gilmore red dot 35 MM for my Taurus .357 , and I'm very happy with it . I also ordered at the same time a Ultra dot too compare the two . To me the Leupold had better optics , but they are both good . The Leupold costs more . you can see the leupold at www.gilmoresports.com , the Ultra Dot the best price was from larry guns , www.larrysguns.com and they have free shipping . You will have to decide which one is best for you but I have found if you buy a cheap one you will wind up buying a better one in the future.

I have a 30mm millett on my bh. They have one of the best warranties. 5 years. Also I got 0 mag. With this you can shoot with both eyes open. You don't lose your depth of field. After some practice, you don't even see the scope or gun. Just the target and the dot. Also I find that with the millett, there is very little flare. this is a very personal thing. Everyone likes something different. the only thing that i can say is to practice.

RB-3, if the dot seems fuzzy or out of round you may need to have your eyes checked. I have a dot sight and after a few years I thought it was going bad. It was my sight that was going. After I got glasses the dot was nice and crisp again. If you haven't opened the rings that came with your revolver don't. You can exchange them for 30mm rings with the factory. If the rings don't come with torx screws you can get them from Ruger for $.50 per screw. The have target grey too for the same price. Dave

I have a Bushnel trophy with the multi reticles on my Contender 7-30 Waters. Hasn't been shot alot but so far it still works. I am very happy with it. :grin:

Just put a Bushnell Throphy Red Dot on my RagingBull .454. I like it so far, much better for me than a regular scope. The rings and wrench as well as a sun screen were included in the box. I know a guy who has a cheaper BSA RD on his TC Encore muzzle loader (.45) and he claims great performance on deer out to 200 yards!

The Ultradot works well on a hard kicking, light-weight .357 of mine. Been on for about 5 years and shot quite a bit!

I can recommend two red dots:

1)Millet SP-1, one inch tube, comes w/rings, see thru scope caps, about $150.

2)Ultra Dot, one inch tube.

Both of thes models have seen numerous rounds through a .454 and guns of less recoil and are still going strong, they have variable red dot power (put on low during cloudy, dusk & dawn times or crank it up on sunny days), and small dots (3 MOA).

One thing to watch is the size of the dot, a 12 MOA dot will cover up at least 12" of your target at 100 yards! The smaller the dot the better.

I have a Millet 1 inch on my Ruger 1 inch rings (mark II) and do like it.
The millet line is available at Midsouthshooterssupply.com very reasonable. I got mine for $75.

I have shook a couple rede dots off my .454. I finally got a Burris Speed dot.Works great, very tight and easy to sight in.

I used a 30 mm Ultra Dot on a S&W Classic Hunter in .44 mag to take a nice buck but the 10mm dot was a bit large for fine accuracy.. I then went to a 30mm Millet Reddot with variable size dot feature and took a nice 8 point whitetail with it last year..Holds up well to full power loads and you can dial it down to a small dot for 100 yard shots.. I would like one of the Leupolds or a Burris, but haven't conjured up the dash.. Cbagman

I have an Ultra dot on my BFR in 500 MAG and it is holding up very well after over 350 rounds. I also have a Bushnell Holo sight on my S&W500 and it also is holding up very good with over 200 rounds. So those would be my choice. If they can hold up on a 500MAG thet should hold up on a 454 Casull. The Ultra dot will work with your 1 inch rings.

I know of 3 Bushnell Holosights that had their displays shaken apart from 454 Casull. The 1st was on a Taurus RB, 2nd on another RB(mine) with the 3rd on a SRH. All 3 were returned to Bushnell and repaired free of charge and the tech stated that they are rated for 44 mag as a max. Now they all held up for the 1st 150 or so 240gr at 1700fps and 300gr at 1550fps but after that it became real iffy. Since then they have been replaced with JPoint dots which have long surpassed what the Bushnells took. Attached it to my RB by modifying/milling the B-Square JPoint base for a Ruger until is slipped in to the RB, drilled and set the horizontal pin and its rock solid.

I sent one of my Milletts back 2 weeks ago. Looked like some glass inside broke loose. Will let you know how I make out. I was shooting hot loads in my S&W 657. 41mag.
