Remmington 45/70 bullets
« on: October 15, 2006, 01:58:25 PM »
I've had good luck shooting the 300grhp Remmington factory ammo. I decided to start loading mainly to reduce recoil for my wife. I had ordered the dies,reloader7,and 300gr Remmington hp bullets several months ago. I had time to burn today and decided to give it a go. I was amazed to see on the bullet package dia.457. I haven't slugged the barrel but I assumed I had ordered .458dia.
Any help on this ?

I wish I could help you out buddy but I have not loaded any of the Remington bullets or used any .457's in my 45/70. I get good results with my 350 grain Hornadys but they are .458's. I do seem to remember some here using Remington bullets in thier 45/70, perhpas they will see this and answer...Good Luck....<><.... :)

TenRing,I use Remy's in my 95 Marlin.They are .458,300 gr.JHP.Manufacturer #23654.I looked and can't find any 457 listed,anywhere.Maybe it's a mis-print.Have you put a set of calipers  to check the size of the bullet?............Rick

The Remmington plastic bag reads, 45/70 Government 300sjhp dia. 457 22992. I too was hoping for a misprint but my mikes say .457. I guess I just got some more weight for the lead sled rest.
thanks for the reply

Try shooting them and see how they do...Sometimes they will do just fine...especially with the light loadings..

I size my home cast to .457 for my BC barrel, try them before you give up on them.
I couldnt ever get RX7 to shoot good with my 500gr hard cast in the 45-70 but IMR TrailBoss shoots great.  It is designed for cast bullets, its very bulky I only use 16.8grs of it and it is a compress load in for 45-70, its not a hot load at all.  Cant sit there and shoot 40 rounds of it with out complaining.

If you are shooting a Handi Rifle in .45 70, it most likely is 0.457" or perhaps even less.  The need for oversized bullets when using cast in rifle barrels does not applly to jacketed bullets in any way.  The Remington bullets will in all likely hood shoot just fine in your rifle.  If they don't  send me a PM here and I'll pay postage for you to mail them to me.  My BC mics at 0.457 and one friend's Handi mics at 0.4565".  I don't think I know anyone  who has an oversixed (over 0.457) barrel in their Handi or BC.  Doesn't mean there aren't any but I think it's uncommon if it occurs at all.

I shoot both 300HP and 405 SP in my 45/70 and get excellent results with both.  I am shooting only trapdoor loads.

I have only shot the 300gr remington HPs in my buffalo classic.  If you dont want them, send them my way

They shoot great, well at least out to 200 yards.  I havent checked any farther than that.

My 300gr Remmy bag says .458 on it. I get excellent accuracy with R7.
