7mm08 OAL cartridge length
« on: October 16, 2006, 02:15:37 AM »
New to the Encore.  Genrally load and hunt with rifle and revolver,  Want to start working up some loads and want to know about OAL, Factory specs which I have or can I work off the .010 off the lands?  Nosler 140 BT. Guess what I am asking is there anything peculiar to watch for when loading for single shot pistol.  Thanks

Do NOT start at .010 off the lands with Factory equivalent loads!!! You could be in HIGH pressure areas that will damage you and/or the gun.I'd go with the factory OAL and work up powder loads to a MAX, then drop back a few grains and adjust OAl till I found best accuracy. Some times with a single shot you do not get the usual pressure signals. IF THE CASE GETS "STICKY" and hard to eject STOP. If the gun becomes hard to open STOP.Check every thing TWICE ,then check again! Not every gun will tolerate the same loads. One load will blow one gun the bits while shooting bugholes in another gun.The 708 is a fine round but I find the Nos BT to damage to much meatfor MY tastes. I'm a meat hunter ,but won't turn down A NICE TROPHY :D

Since you are not dealing a magazine, which restricts the OAL, you can load the single shot as long as you want. You may experience some closing difficultly if you get into the lands though. If you go into the kands you may want to back the load off some if you are near max. I put the OAL where it shoots most accurately.
