Cheapest .223 Ammo
« on: October 16, 2006, 10:00:50 AM »
Where is the cheapest place to get .223 ammo?  What brand is the cheapest.  All I want it for is screwing around with.  I reload for accuracy and I don't want to burn up my pet loads in my AR.

Wolf is probably the cheapest, but I won't use steel cases in my Colt. Cabela's bulk ammo is a pretty good deal.

Cheapest I've seen are Wolf, and Winchester's White Box. Winchester makes two types of the white box stuff; the FMJ I've seen run 40rds for $10 when you can find them. The other is 45gr HP's, $18/40rds., but a lot more accurate. Try www.midwayusa.com ; they have some good deals at times.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

Walmart sells box (40 rounds) of wincheter 55grain FMJ for about $9-10...however not all walmarts sell em

www.sportsmanguide.com has some nice deals on the Wolf FMJ 55 grain, and in regards to them being in a steel case, I personally could care less because those steel cases woun't hurt your ar-15 (Im assuming you have an ar-15 right?)

If you go with the Wolf ammo make sure the cases are a dark grey.  At one time there were some that had a greenish color to them.  These had a thin coat of lacquer (sp?) on them.  As your AR heats up the lacquer will come off gum up your action.

If you chose the "Wolf" get a can of carb cleaner to disolve the laquer in your chamber... Other than that advice, load and blast away.

also make 200 rd hollow point packs.
They are brass case, not like the wolf.

in regards to this comment, wolf stopped making Lacquer cases back in begining of 2004ish...... all the new cases use different coating that does NOT melt in heated chambers or anything of that sord.  They are no dirtier than your good ol winchesters.  Thier new technology is called "polymere coating" or something in that sort.  I used to hate wolf ammo because of the lacquere coating, turns your chamber into gummy bears, but with this new polymere stuff, I can really get my ar used to them.  Plus I can easily get 1.5 - 2" groups at 100 yards (not bad for a plinker)

I have fired literally thousands of rounds of laquered cases in
SKS's, Mini-14's, HK 91's, Egyptian Hakims, And never have found the problems described
with coating the chamber? A friend has a full auto AKM and an AK-47
and they will eat them up as fast as you can feed them.
I do not own any of the M-16 "clones" but the ones uncle sam issues
jammed up on about anything you fed it anyway so I do not see the
laquered cases being any more reliable or un-reliable in them.
The same flaws carry over to the civiliam models.

Sorry, fella, but my computer's B.S. detector has just been pegged right off the scale. I have fired over 5000 rounds thru my pre-ban Colt and have never had a jam or misfire. And, I'm pretty lax about cleaning, but I use good brass cased ammo. As for Uncle Sam, he's been issuing the little black rifle for over 40 years. Guess why. ::)

Please, if you do not own a m-16 or its clone do not say this horrifying thing about them.  I have had my bushmaster (one that I just sold 1 week ago) since last february and fired close to 1000 rounds of 55 grin FMJ wolf (the newer stuff) and NOT A SINGLE jam or misfire.  As far as I know, they are just as reliable as all the ak-47 clones I have fired AND MUCH MORE accurate.

I knew the lacquered cases were no longer being produced, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up in case they came across some old stock.  The range I go to is real picky about picking up your brass after you shoot. Apparently, once it hits the ground it becomes their property.  So, Wolf became the answer - they can keep that crap.

If you have never carried one in combat, Your opinons or those of
your computer really do not interest me, BS detector or not, they are junk.
The ones that UNCLE SAM issued are the reason I do not own
a civilian model. Uncle sam covers a lot of stuff up so civilians do not hear about it, but we had several folks who literally refused to go into combat with them after the first couple of fire-fights.
A soldier who will risk prison because of a piece of junk weapon he is issued, is a pretty bold
statement.  And when you typed 5000 rounds Through a Colt clone without a Jam,
I am absolutely sure that is what caused the BS detector to sound an alarm !  ::) ::) ::)

Man, I didn't know my computer had a BS detector....
When I typed 5000 rounds through a Colt Clone without a JAM
It shut my computer down to keep me from spreading any more BS.

You REALLY need to own one or shoot one before you go on saying MORE BS like this.....
How can anyone have such negative comments about something HE HAS NEVER TRIED.... and please I beg you, don't come back to me saying "oh Ive heard many people who never went to combat with one becuase they are junky and unreliable blah blah blah"....  I don't give a flying Sh** what you've heard, unless you try one out, you have no room to speak

Funny thing, the mouse guns are still being used by our modern military. I just hit 6000 rounds in my own Colt this week, and still not one jam. I'd call that a damn reliable gun. Just an observation, but I think it's easier to do simple maintenence if you are not stoned or too busy having sex with 14 year old girls.
