A Helwan Brigadier would be my choice of handguns.
I bought one probably 2 decades ago when they were called
model 951's... As far as I can remember it has never jammed even once.
I think they can still be had for less than 200 bucks.
extremely accurate and reliable.

I was thinking about this. If money is a really big issue, then CCW is pretty much eliminated. There is such a cost and time comitment in my state to get a CCW that I don't think anyone looking for the absolute cheapest weapon would have much cash left after the class. You could illegally carry, but that adds another risk. If you are really poor do you want to loose your job while you sit in jail? That would just make the problem worse, so illegal carry is out for me.

Legally, I would go look for the cheapest most beat to heck 12 gauge I could find. Assuming I still know what I know about guns I could do some repairs and make almost anything shootable, so long as no major springs or parts were completely gone. Trimming down the barrel a little bit would be good. I think a LEO would definately know what was up if I had a 18.25" hand sawed barrel, but something around 20 might look less suspicious, especially if I re-soldered the front bead and used some magic marker and sandpaper to clean up the muzzle. It's my grouse gun officer. One box of 7-1/2 trap loads and I'd be all set. Practice makes perfect, but just knowing what to do is often good enough, so I wouldn't need to practice if I couldn't afford it.

If I wanted to be protected for CCW type situations, I might get some pepper spray and a lockback knife. I have a Tommahawk framelock knife that cost me $5. I can open it with the thumb stud one handed, and it isn't as threatening as a gun. Almost any blue collar type guy can get away with carrying a folding knife. The pepper spray is also inexpensive, legal to carry in most places, and provides a less severe response to a threat. Also, nobody ever really "wins" a knife fight, so the pepper spray would be a way of avoiding it.

It is actually a licensed copy of the Beretta model 1951
8 round mag. Made in Egypt. The Beretta model 92 is the
great grandchild of this model. It was standard issue in Egypt until quite recently.
and probably is still a reserve weapon.
I would buy another without hesitation, it is that good of a weapon.
I have heard several grumblings about the quality of Egyptian steel
but I have never seen any evidence of a problem except in someones opinion.
I have never seen any tangible proof of weak steel.

Glad you brought up this subject. I have never really given it much thought although I probably don't qualify as "dirt poor" just "sorta poor".
The suggestions regarding a 12 gauge made me think and I'll probably be buying a Mossberg pump some time soon. Excelent idea!
I presently own two pistols that are what I consider very inexpensive, accurate and dependable.  They are the S & W Sigma (just over $200.00) that comes in 9mm or 40 caliber, and a Bersa Thunder 380 (around $200.00). Dolllar for dollar probably two of the best buys out there. :)

Somewhere along the line I feel like we have switched from "Gun for the poorest of people," to "Poorest gun anyone would buy."

Poor folks can save up and buy a used S&W or Ruger without resorting to junk. Whether you're rich or poor, you still get what you pay for. One of the most accurate guns I ever bought was a used S&W Model 10 I got for $175. Sweet gun. I had squirreled away a few bucks, so no one went hungry, no bills went unpaid. Great quality handgun, accurate and dependable. Some of the options mentioned so far are fine, but others I sure wouldn't want to risk my life, or that of my family, on for sure.

Hey, but that's just my opinion. Don't mean to step on anyone's toes! I'm just as biased as the next guy! ;D

If I was poor and wanted a handgun it'd be a Hi-Point in 9mm. Cheap cheap cheap...

If I was even more poor and wanted any gun to defend the homestead, it's be an NEF/H&R 12 gauge (single shot) with a home made sidesaddle.

With Hi-Point level money I'd be leaning toward a NEF/H&R Pardner Pump 12 for a long gun...

With a cheap 12 one can feed the family and protect the home. Actually even with enough for the pump I'd get the single shot and several boxes of ammo...

If I HAD to have a rifle for whatever reason (zombies, SHTF, etc.) then I'd get a Mosin 91/30 or an SKS, depending on what I felt my needs were at the time, assuming $150 = max. Probably Mosin, but only because I really like them...

Buy an inexpensive short barreledpump shotgun and fill it with birdshot, ( I personally know how devistating this is on a perp at in house renges). Then put a shell carrier on its stock and put buckshot in there. You cannot be better armed with this combo. Easy to use under stress and the birdshot at in house ranges will probably not leave the perp alive to sue you afterwards.

Birdshot is great . . . if attacked by a bird. Our local police suggest something bigger. A wounded man can sue you (yes, believe it or not greedy lawers will try), and even if he loses, you have spent time and money on lawyers, etc. defending YOUR actions. Even our DA says to leave him with an empty chair, meaning dead felon. If the guy breaking in is wearing a coat and/or heavy clothes, bird shot might not do the job, even at ranges of 15-20 feet.

I know Billy is going to disagree with me. (Sorry, it's not a personal attack in any way, shape or form!) I haven't had to shoot anyone. I'm just passing along information from LEOs who have, and a ER doctor who has picked birdshot out of several unfortunate (but very much alive) hunting buddies.

I won't take it as a personal attack.( I have. Im still debating in my head wheater this world is better without him.)  But I'll tell you what. At about 15 feet #6 birdshot was fatal to my attacker. One hit In the abdomen. The doctors couldn't save him. I'd really not talkabout this part of my life no more. But I hope if someone else runs into this situation THEY are the victore too.

Griz I am talking from personal experiance.

I'd say at out of house ranges bigger shot may do better. But in my experiance. In the house I couldn't have asked for more.

Thank god for the right of self defence.

I think a load of #4 express will pretty much finish said felon.  It did my friend.  In a pump alternate #4s and 00.

Hello...

I bought a Russian commercial Makarov for $99.  Came with an E. German holster but only one mag.

A Makarov is a nice self-defense pistol.  For a 'house gun', it couldn't be beat.  If you have a carry permit, it is adequate.

Good deals are out there.  For $99, if figure I did pretty good.

Cheers,
Gary

Billy, I'm sorry you had to go through that experience, but I sure am glad it worked out the way it did, and that YOU are the one that walked away alive. Don't debate the issue. I'm an old Calvinist who believes in the total sovereignty of God. He preserved you, and the evil doer was escorted to his seat by the fire. We're all glad you're here to keep sharing your experience and knowledge with us.

Back when we were newly weds and in college, the wife and I were dirt poor and lived in a high crime area.  The house next door had two prostitutes plying thier trade along with "gentlemen" visitors at all hours of the day and night.  Gunshots in the nieghborhood were common.  Substance abuse by the area residents was rampent.  My home defense gun was a Savage model 720 in 16 gauge.  The finish was terrible and I cut the barrel down to just beyond the legal limit.  If memory serves, I kept that gun loaded with five rounds of #4 buckshot.  I never had to use it.  And thankfully we no longer have to live in an area like that.

I would go for a semi auto .22 rifle. When I was a kid I had a Remington Nylon 66 that held 15 rounds of long rifle and shot like a champ. I think I could have kept the bandits out of the house with the old 22. Just buy high speed hollow points by the brick and you would be set.
