.204 Ruger Case Preparation
« on: October 16, 2006, 03:01:40 PM »
With my .223 Handi all I do is neck resize. Will I get away with this with the .204 Ruger?? Also what is max case length please.

Thanks

I bought a used set of Redding delux 6x47 dies. These dies would size the body too much and worked the neck too much. the 6x47 uses the same 222Rem Mag cases as the 204. There are no factory cases for the 6x47.

I had these dies converted by Jim Carstensen to bushing dies and honed to size the fired cases bodies to -0.0015". Meaning the case body has a radial clearance of 0.00075".

They dies work perfect. The bushing sizes the neck about 2/3 of the length and leaves the rest as fired. The bushing is 0.262". Fired case neck is 0.264

I prep these cases the same as I do my BR brass, but outside neck ream only partially. Drill all flash holes to the same size and uniform the primer pockets.

The light rifle produces 3/8" varmint accuacy, not quite as good as a bolt gun but not too bad. 3500 ft with a 55gr bullet out of a 24" barrel. Had it going over 3600 but brass would not last very long at that speed with the Handi stretchy frame.

Use only soft primers Federal or Winchester.

McLernon:  I full length resize my 204 brass I have reloaded it 4 times now and maybe after the next sizing I well have to trim them, I also just bump the shoulder back for best accuracy.
Trim length is1.840 I can't remember what the max length is I well find it later.
