The terms "long-action" and "short-action" do not refer to the length of the stock.  These are the terms referring to the length of the magazine (and the size case that they are long enough to feed).  The long action will generally fit any cartridge of 30-06 length.  These would include the .270, .280, 30-06, etc.  The short-action cases are based on .308 Win. length rounds like the .243, 7-08, .308 etc., as well as the new WSMs.  The nice thing about the short actions is that they are lighter, and can be had in compact stock configurations, if that's what your hunting style or body type prefers.  I hope that this helps.

I have an older tang safety version of both (6mm short action and 7mm Rem. Mag long action). If no one else can tell you we can do some measuring and compare.

GB--wouldn't the 6mm be a long action also??

Badger---give us more info----is it from a MKII or tang safety model??

Also---in the future---please keep your threads to different topics instead of multiple threads on the same subject---Thanks.

Nope, wish it was.

On the 6MM short action the cut in the action for the cartridge is 2.75" long. The cut out in the stock appears to be 3.2" long.

On the 7MM Rem. Mag. long action the same measurements are: 3.2" and 3.6" to the  best of my ability to measure them without removing metal from stocks. That should be close enough for you to measure and determine which yours is.

My 77 MK II in 7x57 is classified as a "long action."

What are the measurements on it in the two places I listed them on yours? Mine is the older tang safety guns not the newer MKIIs.

As a test try this:
1-Assume a squat position.
2-Have a friend hand you your rifle.
3-Mount the rifle. If it snags on your clothing or feels uncomfortable, then the stock is too long. This test should be done in your hunting cloths for best results.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I like a Length of Pull of 12.5".
If you can get closer, get closer
If you can get steadier, get steadier.
