What was it?
« on: October 17, 2006, 05:25:15 AM »
Along while back on the forum moderated by Buckskinner, I told of seeing "something" in the woods.  I had also related this story on an old site that is no longer up.

Well, its happened AGAIN!!  Last Friday night I pulled into an empty campground along a creek, catching a glimps of something in the headlights that actually gave me a "start" even though I was in my truck.

I saw a dark shape stepping behind an Alder bush.  It was a quick glimps of the back of the head and the back.  I backed the truck to look again but didnt see anything.  DID NOT get out of the truck. I was to startled about it. Whent back the next day to look around.  What ever I saw had to be walking in the creek to skirt around the alder bush.

I dont know what it was and cant explain it.  Could have been the rump of a bear, I dont know.  This place is about 9 or 10 miles from where I saw the last "thing" I saw.  About 7000 feet in the Sierras.

I dunno.....

Can you recall how tall it was? Color? About how tall was the Alder Bush, compared to the thing?

Could have been a bear, but you never know. Hear any noise that it made? Things like that happen to me, and it drives, me crazy as to what it could have been. LOL What was the temperature out that night.? Does the place have any unusuall history of strange sightings, like bigfoot or bears?

good story. If you think of anything else, let us know.

Looking over the area the next day is how I determined "it" had to be in the creek.  The alders ""it was behind overhang the creek.  The angle of my truck, the hight of the bank, the alder and sage, make me think "it" could have been as tall as a man.

Would that rule out a bear?  I thought about that. If a bear stood to look at my truck, then turned to drop to all 4s, it could have looked like what I saw as it went down.  There are bears in the area but not a lot. The thing that got to me was how my own reaction was so intense. I have never reacted to bears like that. In fact, I probably dont have enough fear of bears.

That imediate surge of fear, surprised me!  It was like, BAM!!!  What the hell was that!!??  Did I just see what I saw??!!  Is that it again!!??

The last time I had the experience was in 2001.  I was driving down an old logging road, around mid morning and saw a tall man in dark clothing step into a thick small stand of timber. I thought, a hunter, I'll talk to him.  Drove down to the timber edge, about 100 yards, and  there is NOBODY there!!  I can see well into and through the stand and nobody is there. Good cammo? I look and look and look and nothing.  Hair on the back of my neck started standing up, all my scenses started going off, I drove away!

Dont know if any others have seen anything around there. I'll have to check it out.  I'm getting funny smiles when I tell the story. Two times in nearby areas, only really a few years and a few miles apart, have me wondering...

Havent been on line for awhile, work and hunting you know.

Took my son up there to the sighting, looked it over with me.  We came to the conclusion that "it" had to be in the creek, so no tracks.  I would say "it" was medium brown. Had to be 5+ feet tall.  All I can really tell you.  Havent really asked to many about similar sights,  funny looks still.  I'm really kicking myself about the first sighting a few years ago.  Soft dry area then, should have been some sign.

All in all "it' could have been a bear. I have my doubts do to my own gut reaction.   We'll see. I'm gonna spend a lot of time hiking up around there this coming spring and on.

You mentioned Sierras?  Sierra Nevadas?  If so where at did this and the other encounter take place?

Sierra Nevadas.  OK, but that is a big area.  Was there a city or town nearby?  Can you give a general area?  What highway were you off of, or what road off of what highway?

Without knowing where you were even guesses are not very good guesses.

Inresponse,   I didnt think it would be a good idea to tell my exact location. I'll just say north of Tahoe, south of  Frenchman Lake.  I realize thats a big area but it does give an idea of the terrain.  Most of that is wooded but not heavy/thick woods on the eastern slope.  The western slope is thickly wooded.

Nonya,  Both of my sightings have been brief.  Both times I've seen it it has been stepping into/behind timber or brush "getting out of the open".

Nonya, the 1st one I saw "stepped" into the timber.  I went down to look but it was gone.  I think it used the cover of the  thick timber to cover its exit.  The 2nd, recent, one I saw going left to right in the headlights.  It dissapeared behind the Alders growing on my side of the creek.  I have no idea at all which way it went.  I looked it over later and it could have continued down the creek or uphill behind the cover of the Alders.

Thinking about the 2 now, it seems both used the cover of the timber and Alders to disapear.  I hadnt really thought about it 'till your question. I'm sure the 1st one left the area.  The 2d coulld very well have stood behind the bush, I dont know.  As I said, I DID NOT get out to look!!  WOW!! That thing could have still been standing there!!  Now I am totally embarrassed about my fear!!  I could maybe have seen it "eye to eye"....maybe the fear WAS a good thing!!

Hello Echo4

Just read your message and it brought back a couple of memories from my early hunting years.  I was hunting bear about 20 miles up the old road along Harrison Lake out of Vancouver B.C. I had camped over by my self and was wandering around enjoying the day.  It was a blue sky Sept day and I had parked my truck just off the road and circled way round having a look.  I came to a stretch of trail that was about 60 yards long, wide and flat, just like the trails in our Stanley Park.  I can remember ever so clearly looking down the trail with the Salmon berry bushes arcing up on both sides and thinking it look just like a tunnel.  I could see my truck.  By golly I don't know what happened to me then, I stopped dead in my tracks and heard myself say,"if I go down there it will get me".  I was really frightened.  What upsets me on thinking back is this, it was a beautiful fall day about 3 o'clock, I had been wandering around by myself all day an the day before and I was carrying my 30-06.  I was in my thirties and had been hunting for years.  You mentioned being scared but I felt like my mind had gone into a differant zone.  I actually walked back the way I had come to get to the truck, about an hour's walk.  I still feel sort of silly about it but I just could not walk down that darn 60 yard trail and no, I did not go back for another look, just drove away in my truck and went back to where I had camped the night before and felt just fine.  I have been hunting for nearly 55 years and only had one other experience like that.

  Hello to all,

I read Little Pete's post and could not help but chime in. Often we live so insulated by our civilized life we turn off or ignore our primitive instincts. If you sensed danger down the pathway, there probably was, most of us may not even have recognized that, but being in nature for a few days and "tuning in" so to speak alerted you to potential trouble. You may not have identified exactly what the danger was, but you sensed that it was there.

I think this happens alot and folks feel it as a silly notion, or something "supernatural" but it was just your brain and senses more on the alert, even if the threat wasn't entirerly percieved the basics of something harmful to you were.

Pete, that feeling you had was exactly the same as I had on seeing the one in the creek!

rv, your right we loose ourselves in civilization.  That old saying about following your first instinct is true. We have "it"in us, its just that some of us can bring it out some and others have it buried so deep it lost.

I once snuck to the edge of one of my Marines on a guard post, layed down in the brush and watched his feet. ( You never look directly at someone 'cause they will look right back at you!) He stopped and looked around, walked away, came back and looked some more.  That kid got REAL nervous!! He looked and looked, shuffled around and slowly walked away.  I quietly left when I could nervous my self because I had forgotten it was an armed post!

He sensed it but just couldn't see it.  Its in us. Its there..
