280 Rem what ammo are you shooting?
« on: October 17, 2006, 05:32:28 AM »
I bought me a handi 280 w/ a 26'' barrel about 6 months ago and i'm just now getting around to shooting it. Shame on me i know. I had planed on hand loading some barnes tsx but time has ran out and deer season is almost here and i just don't have the time to do so. I bought me some Hornady SST 139 Gr light mags but it doesn't seem to like them. What have you guys found to work in a factory load? Please help. Thanks

Well, I tried a few factory for the .280 and never had much luck.......Hand loaded many different bullets to get it to shoot good...Best was Hornady 154 RN and 175 RN Interlock....

I am using 140 gr.Wichester Fail Safes, but the 140 gr. Remington Corelokts shoot well, too.

140 gr. Remington Core-lokts all the way.  1-1/4" or better five shot groups @ 100 yrds if I hold my mouth just right.  ;)

I've not done much shooting testing with the Core Loct 140's, but my .280's really like the Core Loct 150's.  The .280 is one of my most accurate Handi's and was also one of the easiest to zero.  IIRC, some folks are getting good results with Federal Fusion's.

I use the 150 gr. corlokts and get 2975 fps. through the chrono, and its the most carried of all my Handi's. I havn't tried the 140's so I can't comment on them although everyone else say's they shoot the best in there gun.    Digger

Thanks for the information. I figured that most ever body what have good success with rem cor locs. I found the same results in my 7-08 hani but i realy like barnes tsx's so i hand load for it. I went out to the range to day and tried out the 280 rem again it was kind of funny if i let the barrel get hot it would shot about one inch groups. If i took about ten minute breaks between shots and keep the barrel cool it shot two and half inch groups. So the money i spent on 2 boxes of hornady sst's wasn't a complete wast i did find out that it deffinetly will not shot them from the factory. I will try some more factory loads before i start hand loading. Thanks for all the info.

Are you placing the rest under the  hinge? They shoot best from a rest that way, but you can work with the forend to get them to not be so sensitive to rest palcement. See if it will shoot a nice group cool without the forend on it, but put the forend on just to reload, then take it back off to shoot. If it shoots a good group cool without the forend, then you need to work with the forend pressure.
