the most powerful hunting cal.
« on: October 17, 2006, 07:26:09 AM »
well i was reading a reloading book and i saw some cool stuff about the big cal. from what i saw the .577 tyrannosaur with a 750gr going at 2460fps with the power of 10077ft-Lb is the most powerful cal. there is to used. the 700 nitro express with it's 1000gr going at 1900fps has a power of  8015ft-lbs. the 500 A-square has a 600gr and goes 2470fps with a power of 8127ft-lbs. the 460 weatherby mag. with 500Gr FMJ,  goes 2600 with a power of 7504ft-lbs. to me the 460 weatherby mag is a good to reload because the is bass and bellets made in the cal. for it.

Unless you own a 50 BMG.  Point blank range is 500 yards and it has over 14000 ibs.  If I was hunting something I needed the 577 for I would rather have a 50 BMG + the ammo is cheaper!

Yeah, the 50 BMG is more powerful,  but try dragging a 30+ lbs rifle and ammo through the bush all day  and then getting it into action when that wounded (insert Buff, Elephant, Lion, etc) comes crashing at you at 15 yards!

Those kind of cal's are impressive, but becauce of the recoil rarely used. Most of the rounds I read about are in the 5000 to low 6000 FPE range. My to favorite rounds in a Bolt or a #1 are the 458 Lott and the 470 Capstick in a Double a 500 N.E. 3" if you can't kill it with 3 tons of energy your not going to kill it.I do love the BIG STUFF.It's all I shoot, collect, and read about,Dave.

458 Lott-Hornady   500 Solid-vol.2300-FPE 5872
470 Cap.-A-Square 500 Triad-     2400-      6294
500 N.E.-a.Square  570 Triad-     2150-      5850.

I have fired a 50BMG and i like my 8mm or a 12ga. i don't know about thouse big cal. but from what it says they were kicker both to the game and you. I think that a 458 or 470 should kill any game there is.

Imagine a 50BMG in a 10# double rifle. Something surely would die each time the trigger was pulled!

I am only guessing but, I believe some one has used a 50 bmg for big game or dangerous game, Probably worked fairly well.

I saw a picture of an elk that got hit with a .50.I think it was a 750 yds. it bluw close to a basketball size hole out the back.I can't remember who made the hollow point.I love big stuff .375 and up,but I think the BMG has a place in target and wars not so much on game,Dave.

I just think that some large calibers seem overkill, but then again I have never had several tons of pacoderm running at me.  If I did I would want as big as I could get.  30 lbs is alot, but then again what is the recoil from a 577 or 700 nitro?  Would you recover to shot again if you missed?

I seen Mark Sullivan of Nitro Expess and other guys with doubles recover pretty quick from the 577 and 600,but I've seen lots of guys on videos young and older not recover as quick from the 460 Weatherby or 416 Rigby.I've only seen one guy with a 470 Capstick an it looked like he got rocked pretty good.It looks like the big straight walls are more of a shuve than a kick, but I've never shot anything that big.Thats just what it looks like to me,Dave.

Here is a variation on the same theme:  What is the best caliber for the job? Assuming this:  One Shot, Animal doesn't Run, and no brain shots.  Buffalo, elephant, kudo, and so on.......My experience, under 300 lbs, 30-06 with a 200 grain norma oryx.  Heart/Lungs dropped where it stood.  What would do that to an elephant?

JJ might know this more than me on this. From all the stuff I've watched and read for Elephant I don't know of any hunt where it was a 1 shot deal unless it was a brain shot. Most hunters and P.H.'s always put that 2nd shot into all the big game need it or not.Unless it's in real heavy cover and you can't get a 2nd shot. These big animals are something to watch Craig Boddington in his dvd Boddington on Buffalo.Says that he's had from 1 shot kills on Buffalo to shooting one 21 times. It is a very good DVD if you like watching Cape Buffalo.Finding Elephant hunt are few an far between.I like Cape's and Hippo myself. It would be interresting to see what JJ had to say about Elephant hunts.

this post is more for the "dreamers" like my self who know they probably will never get to Africa and hunt DG unless I win the mega million (yeh right)..

so heres my dream....
If I had to go Africa and hunt DG, game that can actually stomp me to heck or eat me alive, I would probably shoot the most powerful thing that is allowed.....  I know it sounds stupid but from what I see on OLN and other hunting channels, most DG hunts happen within 100 yards or so.  Now my biggest concern is, what if the rifle is like 30 lbs and close to 26-30" barrel (man that’s alot of gun to carry around all day long)  BUT I HAVE A SOLUTION !!!  I would spend the next 2 years of my life, with a weight lifting bar that weights about as much as that rifle, take out on a 2-3 hour walk every day holding it or strapping it on my back, until im totally comfortable with it, then I'll take it hunting.  So conditioning your self would probably work, its gonna be hard, but its well worth it at the end.

so, the rifle of choice would be................ some 50 BMG bolt auction.

Oh and don't forget, shooting at least 20-30 rounds a week with the gun so I can get accustomed to it and its loud blast (yes I will have a muzzle break)

Were not all dreamers in 3 years my Caddy will be payed off I could go if I wanted to.Africa will still be there.I don't know if I'll take the .50 that seems like a lot of work for 1 shot : :)I think I'll take my Lott or the Capstick,Dave.

Good question.I'm guessing thats why it's still a wildcat. The lightest load on the chart is 750 Barnes at 1925 - 6175 an its at 105 FP of recoil. It doesn't say what the gun weights, but it can't be much. It's insane.I take it your not going to build one :D.Dave.

We've forgotten about the 'grand-daddy' of dangerous game rifles.  A 4-bore gun.  It fires a 4 ounce ball (1750 grains) at about 1900 fps.  Using the muzzle energy formula, I get 14031 fpe at the muzzle.  I tried running the recoil numbers, but Sierra Infinity wouldn't take them.  Probably looking at a 25+ pound gun...  Bore diameter is .930"

Leave the Nyati at home and take the that, if you dare....

The 4 bore. Isn't that the "Baby Baker?" Look at the bright side of these big things. If you miss, you'll be in so much pain that the beating your gonna get from an upset animal won't be nothing! Indeed it may well be a blessing in that it will put you out of your misery! ;D

Ok how about the 2-Guage?  I saw a photo of one in National Geographic Once.  5 pounds of Black Powder and 25 pounds of shot.  Can you imagin a slug for such a gun.  It was used for commerical duck hunting 100 years ago.  I wonder what the recoil was for such a beast?

I think that once it got much bigger than 4 bore, they were mounted to something.  I think they called those 'punt guns', but I'm not sure.  Open fire with the mounted gun and then start shooting the fly aways with a 'light' 6 or 8 gauge.

I also think that they made explosive shells for a 4 bore, if 4oz of lead wasn't enough, we can send a charge of powder along with the bullet.
