270 Winchester & Barnes 130 gr Triple shocks....??
« on: October 17, 2006, 09:50:29 AM »
Ok....

The Load(s) - 130 gr Barnes TSX & 130 gr Win SP bullets. Using 53 gr's of IMR4350, cci 200 large rifle primers, and new Win brass.

I loaded up some 130 gr softpoint Winchester & Some Barnes 130 gr Triple shock bullets from my Weatherby  MK-V in 270 Win.
The 130 gr softpoints grouped real nice at 100 yds, but the Barnes weren't quite so nice.  Not real bad, but not like the cheaper bullets.... :'(

Any thoughts on which direction to go on the Barnes bullets.  These are quite expensive bullets, and I'm hoping to dial it in without shooting up a whole box of them....  More/less powder, faster/slower powder??  The 53 gr of IMR4350 with the 130 gr bullets is always mentioned as one of those "great loads".

First pic is my group at 100 yds using the Win bullets.  (These are the bag of 100, inexpensive flat base, softpoints.)

Then, with no scope adjustments....

Here is the group of Barnes bullets, with the same load as the Win's.

I expected something different, with the higher pressure generated by the Barnes copper bullets, but not sure I was expecting this.  My initial reaction is to drop down to 52.5, or 52 gr's of IMR4350.  I did not chrony these shots, but I'm thinkin that this load shoulda been hitting in the neigborhood of 3050 fps at the muzzle.  Least that's how I had it guesstimated.

Work on seating your bullets off the lands at about .050. That is what Barnes recommend. If you still have problems, then play with the seating depth a little.

Well.....  That might just be the ticket.  A good friend of mine, (A shilo shooter btw) said the exact same thing.  Guess I'll try seating them out a bit more.  I have em seated just below the last ring cut in the bullet.  They're currently C.O.L. of 3.250, and I think I can go out to 3.280 and still get em into the magazine.

Let us know how it works out. I don't have much problem getting Barnes bullets to shoot in most of my guns.

Well, just loaded some up with a C.O.L. of 3.300.  Ran em through the rifle and everything appears to be fine with em.

Lyman manual had the 140gr BTSB's at C.O.L. of 3.350, but they seemed to be buttin up against the rifling just a tad at that length.

Hopin to try em out by this weekend....  I'll let ya know how they shoot.

UPDATE

After increasing the C.O.L. from 3.250 to 3.300 here are the results.

Group on the left with the longer C.O.L., right the shorter cartridge..... ;D

Thanks RedHawk1!

Seems to of closed up a bit. I am sure if you wanted to play with it a little more, your groups may get better yet.

I may play around some more with this load after deer season.  But for know, I'll prolly stick to this.
Beside's it might of been the shooter that caused the group to slide out of the box some....

Either way, this is definetly a step in the right direction.

I beleive you are going the wrong way.you should be decreasing the COL..I have talked with the Barnes techs and whatched their loading CD.they would like you to seat their bullets further from the lands and grooves. Then what other bullet companys want you to seat their bullets at.I hope this helps. But please give them a call and insure what I wrote is in fact correct.I normally get 3 shots touching @ 100yards with the triple shocks using the above advice.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.
