Author Topic: Hammer extensions, ever have this happen? (Read 1828 times)

I was at the range with my Encore today, shooting the 30-06 Pro-hunter barrel.

Anyway, after about 10 rds, my next shot was a "dud".... Tried a couple a more cartridges, and none of them would fire. The primer was getting dimpled, but not firing. Anyway, I noticed that my hammer extension had worked loose. I removed it completely, and the rifle fired fine again. I guess the loose hammer extension was just enough to slow the hammer impact and kept the primer from firing.

Anyway, I know a lot of people have these things on their Encores, and I thought I'd share my experience. I think I'm just gonna leave the darn thing off. Wouldn't want a misfire at an unopportune moment, if you know what I mean.

BTW, the Barrel is a pro-hunter, but the reciever is not. I bought it a month or so before the PH's came out. So, that's why I had the hammer extension......

TC would tell you not to use a hammer extension for that very reason. I don't have any on mine any more, but never had a problem with them on either an original Contender or on a G2.

Well, I had not had trouble with em before, but once it worked loose....

Anyway, I think I'll just pitch the darn thing.

I have never had this problem on any of my handi rifles..... But they come with a hammer extension when ya buy em....

Funny you should mention that, I was shooting my 7mm08 the other day in my Encore and my hammer extension worked loose also. I had 3 misfires. I took it off and went back to shooting, without any further problems. I am done with hammer extensions.

I wonder if this could happen on the turnable hammer on the pro hunter? I kinow it's different but it is kind of like the hammer extension. I'm not sure how it is connected as I don't own one, just curious.

GRIMJIM, I have a Pro-hunter. The hammer extension or off set hammer as I think it is called on the Pro-hunter frame is a lot different. It has a bolt in the center of the hammer allowing it to be off set. I have shot mine a lot and have not had the bolt back off. Also the off set hammer on the Pro-hunter does not add any weight to the hammer as an extension would to the standard Encore hammer.

I was shooting my 30-06 last week and suddenly had a couple of duds. I have hammer extensions on both my Contenders and both my Encores. The only difference is that my extension wasn't loose. I had 3 misfires - dimpled primer, but no ignition. It then started firing again. I have never had any issues with my others. I'm not sure if it was the ammo or the hammer extension.

I had a hammer extension on my Encore. Never had any problem with the 209x50 barrel, but the 7mm-08 would misfire, extension was tight. I ended up taking it off for the remainder of last season. Over the summer I put a stronger hammer spring in, and a new extension, so far so good.

Same happened to me I called TC they said to remove the hammer extension and it will work fine. The factory hammer spring is not strong enough for hammer extensions, but you can go to www.bellmtcs.com and order new springs that is heavy enough for hammer extensions they even offer an extension that wont lossen up and move around. They offer a kit that contains 3 springs, hammer spring, trigger spring (different trigger pull weights) and action spring. All can be changed on your kitchen table. Hope this helps.

while I haven't done it to all my t/c but I did use a bit if good old JB on one stubburn extension and hve had no more problems.

Man, you guys are life savers. Here I thought I had gotten a bad batch of primers.....I was getting 1 misfire for every 8-10 that went off. Was about ready to totally dismantly 60 loads and put new primers in them. Going to take off that hammer extension and see what happens!!

My hammer extension was not loose, but had 40% misfires on my Encore 223. Took it off and no misfires in three years.

I had a few misfires a few years ago, so I called T/C to ask about it!

They said "remove the hammer extension and the problem would go away"!

I removed the hammer extension and the problem went away!

I too had some misfires with one of my Encores. After reading of other experiences I removed
the extension. I went from 30% FTF to 100% ignition. Thanks to all for the help!!

BTW.... My 30-06 Encore works well on MO deer..... Dropped this guy in his tracks.
