aniversary .44 mag
« on: October 17, 2006, 12:57:54 PM »
picked one up today. The local shop had one at a price i couldnt say no to. Sure does feel awkward to me though. That little grip frame with the 6.5 barrel just doesnt sit right in my hand. Sure would have been nicer it 4 5/8s. I think it may be a project gun anyway. A 5 shot .45 or .475 with a bisley grip frame and that flattop frame would look pretty trick.

Lloyd

No sense being "awkward" just long term loan it to me. Then I'd have two of them that fit just fine and it would save you a lot of "project" money.  Thoughtful of me isn't it?

I vote for the 5 shot 45!  And then the long term loan but to me not Larry.  That way you'd save on the shipping cuz I'd just swing by grab some RCBS 300SWC's and the gun at the same time. ;D

Camel im teatering between that thought and just leaving it a 44 whacking the barrel off to 4 5/8s and having it case hardened. Believe it or not i dont have a custom 44 mag and never have and have a few guns allready in .45 done up. I think shortening the barrel on this would do wonders for the way it handles and theres sure aint nothing lame about a 300 grain .44 bullet at 1200fps. Aint never had a 45 5 shot either and wouldnt mind one but it probably wouldnt get loaded any differnt then a 6 shot anyway. I guess if a guys is going to all that bother and expense he might as well have another .475 or 500 built.

Absolutely Lloyd!  Send it down to Ken Kelly and let him cut it to 4", shorten the ejector houseing and rod, and you will have one of the sweetest handleing .44's out there!  I'm thinking of getting one and doing that, or taking a .357 'new' Vaquero and having a short barreled .44 spl made out of it.  I already have a 4" blued Ruger pre-warning barrel and I think the threads are the same.  I just have to wait for a used one to pop up!  Just can't ever leave well enough alone, can we?  44 Man

hey pal find me a 4 5/8s .44 barrel! Clements says he can remove both the warning and the gold letters and both interfere with the sight when cut to that lenght.

I haven't really looked but was wondering if a Bisley grip frame would in any decent way mate up with th eframe of the gun?

There you go Lloyd, no sense "projecting" a fine revolver like that! I can send my address?

i wouldn't cut down the sight radius nor the velocity that the 61/2" barrel offers.

i'd change the grip frame and get on with shooting and hunting with that excellent revolver.

to each his own; but i recommend you think about the work that somebody like magna-port can do to that .44 keeping it a six-shooter.   they can make a semi-custom handgun with the excellent power of the .44 at probably a significantly-lesser expense than going to a .45LC five-shooter.

take care,

I could even live with the stock grip frame its actually a pretty nice setup. I could even live with the caliber as theres surely nothing wrong with a .44 mag. But theres no way i can live with that 6.5 inch barrel. Its at least 1.5 inches to long for this guy

I don't like the 6 1/2 inch barrel either.  I'm thinking about selling or trading mine off.

Joni Lynn, I don't think any of us have tried the 'old' grip frame styles on the smaller frame Rugers.  I'll make it a point to try one when I get the 4 5/8 bbl New Vaquero home.  But I don't have any bisley hammers or triggers to try, don't like 'em personally.  Hey, when are you going to get your new avatar picture up here?  44 Man

My 44 is the Redhawk 5 1/2" barrel. The most I can get out of it is 1430 FPS with 240gr bullets.
I put rubber grips on it. That helps with the recoil.
That Aniversary 44 with 6 1/2" barrel that must be a Ruger

No harm intended.  Actually I'm suprised you don't have your 7-30 Waters barrel on your contender cut back to 4" yet.

How's this pic?
I prefer pics of guns though..........here's my 50th................gee bet it looks just like most of the others.

The is the 44 Bisley, I installed a #5 base pin, Bowen rear sight, spring kit, ebony grip and an ejector rod/shroud set from Brownell's with the cresent shaped head.

Joni Dave clements told me that the bisley frame will bolt right up but you will loose the new safety in the grip frame. Real heartbreaker eh!

The only logical reason to buy the .44 50th Anniv. is for the original style grip frame.  It's not any lighter or smaller than the regular SBH.  I have both.

I have a bunch of Rugers........I wanted a flat top and I like that the grip frame is steel. It's the flat top that sold it though.

I agree with joni i didnt buy it for the grip frame i bought it because of the flat top frame.. The originals are getting to expensive to cut up and fitting a bisley frame to one is an extensive job.

All they did was mill the ears off a Blackhawk frame.  Anyone with a mill can do that.
