New to TC. G2 pistol cleaning question
« on: October 17, 2006, 05:17:17 PM »
Just purchased a new G2, and wanted to know if I should completely field strip my TC, or just wipe it down, and clean the barrel, as one would with any rifle or shotgun?

I've checked Thompson's site, and no info is available.  Also did a search on the web, and info available is not Contender specific.  I did read a post about grit and gunk being present in the inner workings of the Contender.  That's what got me thinking about doing a more thorough job cleaning my pistol.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Joe

no need to mess with the action. but like any barrel it will need cleaning after being shot, and maybe little wipe down in the firing pin area. Thats whats nice about t/c's thats about all that gets really dirty. you know how to get the forearm off and push the barrel pin out, right. but you don't need to take the barrel off to clean, that can be done by just opening the action. i only take the barrel off if i am change it to another caliber.
so what caliber do you have yours in?

Thanks tigmaned.  Did a barrel and exterior cleaning before and after shooting.  Read in another post that the poster found a substance inside the action, which amounted to, in total, the size of a dime.  That got me wondering about cleaning the innards.  Joe

from time to time I use a good choke / carburetor cleaner or break cleaner in the action I do this mostly after shooting my 209x50 barrels. and use a very very light coat of eezox to keep the parts from rusting
you must take all grips off before you use the cleaners.

I have a few of the pre-G2 Contenders. I clean my frame once every 5000 rounds or so. I remove the trigger assembly, spray it and the frame with gumout, then blow it dry with compressed air. Then I do the same with the Eezox. The Contender is made to operate without oil, so the Eezox is the ticket for a super light protective coating.
