Hi

Purchased a new Marlin 336ss in 30-30 and after my anxious 10 day wait here in San Diego went to pick it up and was very dissapointed. Looking down the sights I noticed that the front and rear were not colinear and the rear was canted slightly. Thinking that this was gun specific I looked at all the other Marlins in the store and noticed non-colinearity of the reciever top/rear/front sights. Being a brush gun with greatest propensity to using open iron sights I would have expected better design and manufacturing quality

Is this just typical crude design, lack of quality control and lack of attention to detail to be expected from Marlin and something that one must live with ? I am very dissapointed since it's the only beefy 30-30 in stainless steel out there under $600

Its always a disappointment when crap like that is discovered after the fact. I'd send it back to Marlin - I'm sure they will correct it.

Its very disapointing when you have your heart set on something and it turns out to be a junker, Don't know what has happened to Marlins quality control. The older marlins are great in every respect. I have some of the older Marlins and they are like a good work horse. I do have two of the guide guns both are in 45-70 and the are fine, also have a couple 30-30s the older models. I would give Marlin a call and tell them what you have and they might make it right. Hope you get it to working like it should. Good luck.........Joe.............

The issued Marlin sights are a crude design---most guys go the XS or Williams peeps and/or mount a scope or red dot.

Best thing to do with the factory sight is to fold it down or remove it and go with a superior system.

Thanks all for the support and suggestions to call Marlin. I did not take possession of the rifle in question that was reserved for me. Upon very close inspection (my own laser sighting system), and being a particularly meticulous and thorough engineer, I happily demonstrated at the store how the front and rear sights were out of alignment ie. cut slot for rear and holes drilled for front were not collinear and orthogonal AND those two were canted to the right relative to the top of the receiver block. Even though, supprisingly, I am told by the store most are satisfied with that, it would drive me nuts trying to compensate for lateral corrections while instituting a vertical adjustment amongst other issues. Marlin should do better with their QC. Anyway, I found another Marlin in the same store with nicely colinear sights and receiver top and took possession of that one. Despite the refinement not being in the same league as Henry levers, this is a very robust, reliable and sufficiently accurate workhorse, which is the intent of the model. I love the stainless steel and am very happy to own this Marlin.

The Marlin might not have better sights than a Henry---but it is definitely a better RIFLE than ANY Henry --which are crudely made --aluminium framed pieces of junk. Having looked over every new Henry they had in the store just yesterday---they were just awfull.
