I just picked up a Remington Model 760 Gamemaster BDL in 30-06. The gun is in great shape, what is the opinions of this gun?
I have no plans of right now of putting a scope on it.

You have made a great mistake. You will most likely get bitten by the 760 addiction.

They are a great hunting rifle. Try 54.5gr of 4350 using a 165gr bullet. For me nothing shoulders and swings like a 760/7600. I had an ADL 30-06 (my son has it) and now have a 7600 7-08. I have a VX2 1x4 with a #4 reticle from Premier Reticle on my 7600. After market trigger springs are available and help.

I've got a 7600 in .243. Good gun. One gripe, the way it feeds certain bullets, it deforms the noses and can cause loss of accuracy. I shot one day and couldn't cluster on a paper plate at 100 yards from a 3/4" gun. Much cussing and swearing ensued. I finally found the source of the problem. Switched to poly-point bullets and it went away.

I've got a 7600 in 35 Whelen. Love the thing, as I grew up on a Winchester Model 12. Pumping is natural to me.

Good accuracy - sub MOA with the right ammo. I had to look a bit for the right ammo, though. It didn't like the Remington factory stuff, loves Grand Slams and Woodleighs.

Mine fouls pretty fast. Haven't decided if it is a tight barrel, rough barrel or the Grand Slams, but after about 8 shots, I need to run a serious copper cleaner through it.

I remembered another thing with my gun. It was actually after the first day in the woods. I had fallen and the gun ended up banging off of a log. Keep in mind that I was 14 at the time, so a couple of details might be a bit foggy, but I explained what had happened to my dad and the next day we shot the gun and it would not shoot. Vertical stringing of the shots, maybe 12". Took it to a local gunsmith and he tightened the barrel. Something below the barrel and behind the slide. Fixed it up and it's never happened again.

Thanks for the reply's. I have look at these guns for years and never had a real interest in them. But I thought I would give it a shot and see how I like it.

I received my Model 760 BDL .30/06 in 1979 from my folks for my twenty-first birthday.It was and is my go-to gun for long range shooting when the shot has to count.I don't know how many deer I have killed with it but its been quite a few.Reason my Dad picked a 760 wa I have to shoot left handed because of my eyes.Started with a Weaver K4 but now have a Bushnell 3-9 X40.Great rifle!Only drawback is a Bdl is almost too pretty to carry.

Redhawk1 ,my 760 was the first rifle I bought. I didn't like bolt guns for a long time. I have two now but they can't compete with my pump for the reasons I stated before. I hope yours works for you like mine have.

I also have a 760 BDL in 30.06. Great gun. Extremely accurate. One thing I don't like is the factory open sights, I like the newer Remington sights better. I shot my first deer with it and wouldn't part with it for the world. Actually carried it for the past two days on a deer hunt.

I don't like the factory sights either, so I went out this weekend and got a scope mount for the 760. I had a Leupold 1X4X20 mm sitting in the gun safe and installed it on the 760. Now I will go out and sight it in some time within the next two weeks.

Congratulations on your purchase. I bet you'll enjoy it, especially if you find a load it likes.

I bought one back in 1979 or '80, like yours a 30-06 but an ADL. First deer rifle I'd bought for myself and a tremendous upgrade from the M94 30-30 my Dad had gotten for me. It was the rifle that got me into reloading and has killed several whitetails, coyotes, and one wild hog with 165 gr. Hornady Interlocks.

You ought to try to find a period scope for it - I've got a Weaver "Steel-lite" 2-7 on mine that I bought the summer after getting the rifle. The Redfield Widefield scopes always seemed to be popular on 760's.

I have a Model 760 and a Model 7600 both in .30-06 and they are both great rifles.

The 760 was made in February 1952. The original rear sight has been removed and a dovetail slot blank has been installed in it's place. It is fitted with a Williams, rear, receiver/peep sight. Even though it is 54 years old, I can shoot 2" or less groups consistently at 100 yards with it. Actually, I feel that tighter groups would be no problem for someone who has younger eyes than I do.

My 7600 was made in January 2005. I sighted it in at 100 yards with the stock sights and then installed a Simmons 3-9x40 scope on it. This rifle shoots tight groups at 100 yards of 1" or less as long as I do my part.

Both rifles have been trouble free and I have shot deer and antelope with both of them and an Elk with the 760.

I have a few bolt action rifles too but would just as soon hunt with the 760 or 7600 as one of my 700s.

Well I went out and sighted in my 760 today. I am very impressed at the accuracy of this rifle. I got 1.5 inch groups with factory ammo. Remember it is a 1X4X20mm Leupold scope.

A 1.5" group is very good. A 1-4x20 scope should be plenty for most hunting situations especially, for shots in close cover. Although my 7600 has a 3-9x40 scope on it, I generally keep it on either 4x or 6x.

My 760 is not drilled and tapped for a scope mount and now that my eyes aren't as good as they used to be, I now use my 7600 with a scope as my priimary rifle and the 760 with a receiver/peep sight as a back-up.

I have a 760 in .30-06; it was made in December 1959 but has the 1960 rear sight on it (factory). It came with a Weaver 4x scope with tip-off mounts, but I use it open sighted as my back-up gun. I hope to fit it with a William's peep in the near future.

My main gun is a 7600 in .280 that I recently cut down to carbine length. It carries a Leupold Vari-X III 1.5 to 5 x but it usually stays on 1.5x.

Both guns are fast handling and extremely accurate; they can shoot better than I can for sure. I think you'll like your 760. Good Luck!

Good rifle!! I have 2, one in .30-06 and another in .300 Sav. both shoot very well are fast handling and clean up easy. Good luck, I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.

Redhawk1 my first shotgun was a Ithaca model 37 pump action , i loved it so much i said why not in a rifle . I chose the remington 760 BDL with basket weave checkering in 30/06 over the savage 30/30 pump. I've shot many deer with it using the willaims peep sight but later went to a weaver V4.5 it started out as a 22" but i later had it cut to 18" I think it is one of the best big game rifles around. The weaver is still on it but my 17 year old ownes it know. A very accurate rifle. A friend of mine has the same rifle he uses the 220 grain round nose bullets for hear in the north east for deer and bear and when he visits his Dad out west or wants to shoot long range coyotes hear he slaps on a 3x9 and uses 150 grainers. His rifle is set up like most of mine with weaver grand slam steel mounts and leupold QRW rings. These are leupold Quick Release Weaver style rings with levers.There great to switch scopes or just to go to sights. Good luck with your new rifle . Tanoose

I bought a .270 in 1970. In a moment of weakness, I let a new shop put a swivel in the end of the magazine tube. They didn't check the adjustment after the work, and the tube was screwed in too far to allow the action to fully close. The bolt lock finger didn't lift. The first round I touched off blew the bolt open and the head off the case. I douldn't shoot it without flinching. Couldn't even shoot my Dad's 7600 in 6mm. Traded it in on a 788 and am looking for a Savage 170 in .35 Remington.

My bad, I meant slide tube, and on the 760 the end was exposed under the slide handle. So the swivels were put on the end. The 7600 had the slide tube hidden by the handle. So barrel bands came into vogue.

Pre 1968 Remington Model 760s that were fitted with front sling swivels from the factory were fitted with a .655 inch barrel band type sling swivel mounted 5 inches from the muzzel.

Post 1968 Remington Model 760s that were fitted with front sling swivels from the factory were fitted with a fore-end bolt type sling swivel. Model 7600s also use the fore-end bolt style sling swivel.

You can get a barrel band sling swivel for the Remington Model 760 from Uncle Mike's as well as the fore-end bolt sling swivel from Uncle Mike's. They are also available from Midway. I ordered two of each only a month ago from Midway.

The KEY thing to be mindful of is the year 1968:

If your rifle was made from 1952 through 1967 get the barrel band style. If your rifle was made from 1968 through current production, get the fore-end bolt style.

I purchased another Remington Model 760 in .30-06 last week. It was made in April 1966. The rifle came with a Leupold 4x scope also made in 1966. I haven't shot it yet but it should be a shooter. The barrell is bright with the lands and grooves being crisp and sharp. I don't know about the value of the OLD Leupold scope so I might just take it off and put on a new Weaver Classic 4x scope that I have in my gun safe. It does not have sling swivels on it so I will be mounting them shortly. Since the gun is a pre-1968 rifle, I will be using a front barrel band style sling swivel. I think barrel band type sling swivels look good on rifles especially the older ones.

My plans are to turn my oldest 760 (first issue Feb 1952) into a strictly 180 grain heavy duty use rifle. It is fitted with a rear peep/receiver sight and will be a great rifle for use in moderate to heavy cover for hog hunting as well as bear hunting and if I'm fortunate enough to draw an Elk tag, it will make a great Elk rifle too. I'll also be using this rifle for Cougar/Mountain Lions over the Nevada border (28-miles away) and over the Oregon boder (37-miles away). Cougars are really getting to be a nuisance around here and in just the last three monts, there have been two attacks on humans by cougars over in Nevada. Even though this rifle is a first issue (made in Feb 1952) it has seen some serious though honest use so it's value is only average.
