Finished my 12 gauge pack gun
« on: October 20, 2006, 04:35:03 PM »
Hi All

Well I bought a 12 gauge NEF shotgun at the local pawn shop.  Then I had a gunsmith friend shorten the barrel and put a new bead on it.  (He did a great job)  ;D

Bought a Survivor stock and fore end and voila

http://www.kidcouteau.com/Latest.html

Costs:

Gun $70.00
Stock and fore end $40.00
Smith job $40.00

Total: $150

Kind of pricey for a single shot gun but having it done my way?

PRICELESS  ;D

Just sharin

Great looking pack/truck gun Jason!!! I am sure you will put much in the pot with that little beauty and it will be nice "security" out in the woods and on the trail. It looks as if it would even slide neatly under the bed for the "final" home security system....<><.... :)

Whats's the recoil like? How short did you go with the barrel? Looks like a good practical tool.

I'd much rather be remembered for being a great shot than having the most expensive gun

Hi All

Barrel is a shade over 19" long Overall almost 34"

I havent shot it with the new stock yet (just got it last night)

I did shoot it with its original stock and short barrel.  To me it was slightly more recoil but manageable.  I wouldnt want to shoot 100 rounds through it in a sitting but for foraging I think it will work good

I shot it from close to about 20-25 yards and I found that even at that distance I was still getting a good pattern with 7 shot and buckshot.

Take care
Kid

For a utility/pack gun your choice is a hard one to beat.
What kind of choke did this barrel have before you got it cut down?
I would expect some stout recoil, with such a short and light shottie....still cool though 8)

I think it was a full choke

I like it too.  My idea was also with a 12ga only with black wooden stocks.  Shortened a bit and 'home shaved' to a squire style then painted with Rhino Liner...and MAYBE a Peeper sight.

I have also thought about using the same set up on a USH 20ga.  Now would that be a KICKER with those SST's !!

kid_couteau, That came out GREAT!!! You will LOVE it!!!  I have two similarly set up.

The first is my "CAMP" gun. Its a very old handi. What I like about it so much is that it is a take down!! its parts are almost equal length and it fits PERFECTLY in my bedroll!!

The second is a slug gun I made up some years back. Its a transition gun as its got Walnut stocks and the old style for-end, but the newer push button barrel release. I chopped the barrels to 18.5 and drilled and tapped for Contender front site. Then I drilled and tapped for e Williams receiver site over the chamber. This gun shoots reg REM sluggers into about a baseball at 50yrds. Its recoil is stout so I added a Pachmayr Decelerator pad to it. (Sims where not yet in business)

I use them VERY often, I know you will LOVE yours!!

There ya go, cw!
You must be a mind reader.  That second pic is what is in my "Mind's Eye" for HD/Camp gun.  I have a 24"12ga Mod barrel on an older Nickel frame that wants to look just like that.  Thanks for the pic.

I like the barrel band sling mount, too.

kid:

Nice work. You will love it. A "Shorty" is great outdoors tool. Mine is a Savage Model 94 in 12 gauge, had it made up while in Alaska. Even with no choke, it will keep cheap slugs in an 6 inch circle at 100 yds. Next project is an "UltraShorty" as explained in another thread.
