Got a boar with my shorty 50-70
« on: October 21, 2006, 11:25:44 AM »
Just returned from a preserve hunt with my 6 1/2" 50-70.  I will try to post a story and some pictures later.  I will say I got a 275 pounder (estimated by the butcher), using cast bullets.  Lots of fun.  My "Time bomb" 50-70 is still tickin!

Thanks, The 50-70 worked great, although I must admit the extra speed of my brothers 500 S&W with the same nose profile bullet did obviously more damage.  The load I was using was a 400 gr. LBT LFN at 900 fps. out of the 6 1/2" T/C.  Full penetration was no problem, but exits were about 1" versus the 500's 2+".  My brothers boar had as big an entrance as it did an exit!  I guess velocity amounts to something after all. I still like my shorty Contender, and my pig seems to be as tasty as his!  I wish I had taken a video of this weekend, as the preserve owner had turned a few water buffalo loose to see how they would do, and one chased us for at least 150 yards through the woods while we were trying to sneak up one the boars!  At one point he got within 10 yards, bellering like crazy!  For anyone who hasn't seen one, they look alot like a Cape Buffalo, and this one wasn't nice.  The guide said the one that chased us was close to 2000 lbs.  One shot in a T/C didn't seem like much at that particular moment.  I will try to get the pics on soon.  Thanks again.

Sounds exciting! What hunting preserve were you at? I assume you were using an Encore, is that correct? I'm looking forward to more details.

Thanks guys, sorry it takes me so long to reply, (My computers still busted).  My Contender isn't an Encore but a regular ole Contender with a 6-1/2" barrel made by Bullberry barrel works in Utah.  This is a beautiful barrel, and shoots just as good.  Getting this big of a cartridge to work in such a short tube is hard, but fun.  I may get the hunt pictures on tonight if I can figure out how.  The preserve is in Fairlee Vt., and is called Wild Hill Preserve.  Bill Richter is the owner.
