Probably a dumb question...problem with T/C sights
« on: October 22, 2006, 03:01:58 PM »
I finally got off the dime and loaded up some rounds for my .357 Maximum barrel (10").

My load:
180gr. Hornady XTPs
18gr. 'Lil Gun
Remington Brass-new
CCI standard Small Rifle Primers
Firm Crimp

I took the gun to the range this afternoon and fired a few thru the chrono (mid-1,500 to low 1,600s f.p.s.)

I began at 50 yards with a nice tall berm...
No joy...not finding paper.
Went up to 25 yards...the point of impact is a solid 11 inches high at 25 yards.  I'm good left to right...the bullets are centered on the bull on the horizontal axis.

SO...here's my "dilemma"...the rear sight is down flat to the barrel.  No room to adjust down.  A side note, it looks like whoever owned the barrel prior to me had the same problem as the rear screw is "bungy'd up" pretty good...when I went to adjust, the sight was DOWN as far as she would go.

I've thrown in a couple photos of the sights...maybe they are incorrect?

I'd appreciate any suggestions.  I was hoping I'd be able to hunt deer with this barrel...maybe not?

Bob

Same problem with a 10" .357 Mag barrel.  Factory barrel.  Factory sights.  At 50 yards it 12" to 15" high.  Nice groups, but WAY high!
Probably had the wrong front sight put on at factory.  Mine's at home in USA in the safe waiting on me to get home and fix it...

Frequently used barrels have had the sites removed for a scope, and when sold factory sites are returned to the barrel.  If folks are like me they put the sites in a zip lock bag and are in such a hurry to get to the range they don't mark what barrel they came from.  I have a drawer full of unmarked sites.  It may be a guessing game when I decide to sell a barrel.

I noticed the rear sight on a friends 10" 223 barrel is about 1/4 the height of yours. You could modify that one with a dremmel tool by cutting the notch deeper or try to find someone with rear sight they will part with. I will look in my parts box and if I have one it's yours. I put 2x leupolds or red dots on all my pistol barrels since my vision went south. Another option would be to find or make a taller front blade insert, the existing one comes off by drifting the roll pin out. If you make one make it too tall and you can file it to the correct height. I would probably start with plastic and make a pattern just cause it's easier to work with.

Thanks for the great replies!

No Guns Here,
I hope you find out what's wrong with your .357 Mag. barrel.  We may both have the wrong sights!!

Keith L,
Sounds like you may have hit the nail on the head.

uncle joe,
Thank you for your kind offer.  I'd be happy to pay you for such a sight! (postage/shipping too!)
I understand your vision issue...I'm 48 and I'm soon to be hunting with optics only!  But for now,
I really am going to try to stay with open sights...I don't shoot deer over 50 yards with my T/C
open-sight barrels...I know my limitations.

Hi
T/C has different height rear blades. Call them and ask to get a short one.
Good luck!

Your picture shows the tall TC rear sight, and the short front sight.  You can replace the rear sight with a short one and replace the front with a tall sight.
Your front sight is held on with a roll pin in the botton. For a cheap fix, you can remove the roll pin and pull the front blade up, redrill the hole and install the roll pin.  I have done this on several of my Contender sights and it works well to lower the point of impact.

Thanks folks!  I will try to pick up replacement sights for the barrel from a local t/c dealer.

Perhaps he'd even swap sights (with a little boot for his trouble).

If that won't work, perhaps I'll try the "drill a new hole" suggestion from Rod...I'm not real
handy, so I will first try to find the proper replacements.

I sure appreciate the time everyone took to reply.

Ditto on the tall rear blade and short front one.  Find a local sillywet shooter and they will likely trade with you.  If you dont have any luck, send me a pm.  I will trade with you if you cover the postage.

ngh,

If you happen to see this....you made a inquiry about a place to hunt in Ky near Lexington.  I'd like to accomodate you and the kids, but I haven't gotten a reply in the thread that you started in that regard.
