Well, that's exactly where I was hunting. Just south of town. We headed up (I think it was bench rd) out of town there. Saw some nice bucks, at least bucks that woulda made a nice bow kill.... I was able to get into bow range just about every day I was out there, even came to full draw on a 3x3 at 8 yds before changing my mind, and waiting for a bigger deer. I did stalk within 25 yds of a pretty nice 4x4, but luck, and mebbe nerves
kept me from closing the deal.
I was hunting with a guide from Milk River outfitter's named Dave Jones. He really knew a lot about mulies, and how to get on them with a bow. I feel like I learned alot from him... I've never had more fun hunting than I did on this trip, anyone that has ever hunted only for whitetails in the Midwest, needs to do a hunt like this. Beautiful country, and some of the most exciting hunting I've ever done. I'd move out there in a heartbeat, but my wife thinks it'd be too cold in the winter....
Don't know if you are familiar with anyone from that outfit, but Eric, the owner is a really nice guy, and his Dad was a hoot. His dad also had some of the nicest Mulie mounts I've ever seen....
I'm now workin on doing a rifle hunt in Wyoming, Idaho, or Montana for 07' or 08'... Just depends on how soon I can get some details worked out. Mebbe try & take one with my 1874 C. Sharps...... This time I wanna do it without the guide, as I really prefer do try & do things on my own, and the guided rifle hunts just seem to be, "there's yer mulie, shoot him" kind of hunts. Mebbe not, but after chasin them with a bow, I coulda killed a nice 4x4 or better everyday of the hunt, even with my hawken... Although, they prolly start to act quite a bit different as soon as people start shootin at them......
