Coyote or fox?
« on: October 22, 2006, 06:23:32 PM »
O.K, Varmint experts. What is it? A reddish tinted coyote with a fox like tail, or a really large fox?

The rifle? My buddies Handi 270, which I happen to have in my hands when the "doggy" showed up at about 120 yds.  Bullet entered left front shoulder and exited small of back. Since we were deer hunting it was a Remington 150 gr. At the smack, he never took another step!

My vote is coyote. Colors can vary a lot from dog to dog, from very light to very dark.

It's just a durn nice coyote with a exceptional coat...You aught to skin him out and save the pelt...It would make a nice wall hanging...

An odd ball color phase coyote pup, if the hide is not too blue I'd agree it odd enought to make a good wall haning. I  saw one on the weekend that was the most yellow I have ever seen. I wonder since we are a touch early (seeing prime time is about a month off)  that the color would have been more normal after it had a couple more weeks to sun bleach.

Yup that there is one pretty song-dog....  Definitely not a fox...

I conconsider all dogs that are in any way mixed with a yote, a yote...

I'ts possible this one has some other blood mixed in (irish setter??), but it's definitley a yote in my book...

I've seen em with a little red in their fur before, but not this much...

Good lookin trophy IMHO....

Thanks for the inputs. I noticed that the red fur on it's legs was real soft, like the down coat of my Chessy, but the gray hair was course like other coyote pelts I've felt. Afraid I never thought of caping and keeping the pelt. We are in the frenzy of deer hunting, so was preoccupied.

Could it be a Coywolf, a cross between a Cayote and a Red Wolf?  Red Wolves are small, no bigger than a cayote.  My Dad and Uncle have told me that the Red Wolves that were turned loose in the Land Between The Lakes in Tennessee and Kentucky are crossing with the local Cayotes.  I've also read about it in a couple of varmit calling articles.  That could account for the color and size.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

YOTE. Foxes have a different number of chomosones than coyotes, dogs and wolves. A friend and I studied this up on a mad scientist project. We had a red fox pup and were gonna try to cross it with a beagle. LOL. Wolves and cototes and dogs can all cross but not foxes. Woulda been a neet critter. Maybe?

Coyote

Not sure the why of the color difference, however i shoot 200 coyotes a years and some other creatures also.  I have seen few with that much red color on them but it does happen.  Buyers want more the white colored ones especially for the belly hair, it is dyed to be bobcat fur.  I would definitely skin and have tanned, it is pretty and unique, well to me it is.  Good shot toooooo!!!!

Yep- just a cinnamon color phase coyote.

the head and tail are the simple give away that it is a coyote, the eyes and nose and teeth are different than a fox, the tail is not multicolored and would be a lot larger.  The fox can cover its whole body with its tail for warmth.  The fox has black and white on its tail.  I have seen them from numerous states in usa and europe and canada and all have a multicolored tail except for the silver fox or exotics.

  Thank you
