410 HEAVY SLUG
« on: October 23, 2006, 01:48:20 AM »
Has anyone loaded a heavier slug in a 410. I am in a shotgun only area and I just picked up a winchester 9410 and would use it for deer hunting if I can use a decent weight slug. I have .406 dia. 265 gr. cast bullets and wondered if I drilled into the base to remove 65 grs. that would make them nose heavy and 200 gr. If they would stabilize, is anyones guess. I know the two and a half inch triple buck is around 200 gr. so it it should be able to handle it. It's about time one of the ammo makers put a little thought into the 410 slug, the one they have now is pitiful. Thanks for any help.

I`m pushing 243 gn. hard cast with a gas seal at about 1,750, but I`m running them through a cusrom built gun. A Mouslin Nigant action with a .411 Douglus barrel. That is max. I can get with 2 1/2 in. 410 hulls because I blow the rims if I push them any faster. Without a rifled barrel, or at least a rifled choke tube you won`t gain much due to lack of accuracy. If you looking for a quick fix that will give you a big jump load 65 gn. of a Black powder substitute in one of your 410 case and push in a .410 pistole bullet, the 170 gn. would be the one I would try first. Make sure your barrel is bored to at least .4095 befor you shoot any. The reason I recomand the black powder substitutes is because you can get enough presure to blow the case rim with it, and with smokeless powders I`m not getting good ignation in cold weather with the powders I`ve tried so far.

I've heard of folks using .444 Marlin cases in .410.

In Ohio you can only use case that have plastic case wall. For that reason I am cutting off brass cases ans takeing the brass head off regular .410 cases and am going to put them into the brass heads with the heavy case heads so I won`t blow the rims out.

I apologize if I am hijacking the thread

Has anyone done the 444 Marlin load for a 410?

I was wondering if it would be possible to do a slug load this way

Thanks
Kid

I started this hi-jack, so I'll tell you about what I saw.  It was at a CAS shoot in Victoria BC.  We have a junior class called "Rimfire Wrangler"  Two pistols and a rifle in .22lr and a SxS .410 shotgun.  The shotgun loads put up by the father in .444 brass were just shot, and loaded like any other brass shotgun hull.  I can't comment on slugs, but I can't see a reason why they couldn't be developed.
