case failure with 445 Super Mag
« on: October 23, 2006, 05:27:40 PM »
Another first in my handloading experience.

I was deer hunting yesterday for the opener here in Montana and while shooting at a doe, I experienced a case failure in the 445 Supermag.

Case split/seperated about halfway up the case, leaving about 1/2 of the case in the chamber. It was easily removed with a tight patch at home.

I am REALLY confused by this. This was new starline brass that had been fired 3 times at the most.

Anyone know if Starline had a bad batch come thru their system about a year and a half ago?

P.S. - I got the doe, but it was an UGLY shot and required a finisher ... I am very unhappy with myself.

Mt Jerry

Wish i could help , but i have some Starline brass that is over 20 years old and have never had a problem , you may want to give them a call or e-mail about it , they may not even know that they have a problem , if nothing else you may get some free brass out of the deal .

Here is the link to their web site and e-mail .

I've never had a 445sm before..so I don't know what to tell ya about the brass...all I can say..it's either the brass or the gun...and I do hope it isn't the gun...that would be a big drag...Like Stimp said...give them a call...and you might get some free brass out of it..They'll probably want the case so don't pitch it..Have you had anyother problems with brass over stretching in the chamber or showing pressure signs recently?...You still getting good lock-up on the barrel?..Are you running them up at or over the max loading?...If not...I would tend to believe it was a isolated incident...and maybe a faulty piece of brass...

I hav'nt had any failures yet,and some of mine have been loaded 4 to 6  times with nearly max load.I don't fullenght size them though. Mine is .006 over in chamber area and swell the brass, and if you full length size them it may over work the brass.
And then again I've run across several factory loads that have a split in neck. The dealer that I bought the ammo from immediatly went through the rest of it,and sent 8 box's back to Remington that had split neck's and had never been fired..    Digger

Mine has the hcamber swell too, but it seperated much higher on the case than that area.

I don't think it's the gun,  the chamber lengthening was perfect and there are no flaws in it.  I know this because a friend who is smith wanted to take a peek at it and he examined it with a borescope.

I sent an e-mail to starline so hopefully I will get some more info from them.

Thanks for the help Gents.  I'll let ya know if I hear anything.

Someone here had the reamer and it was passed around, but you can rent one from 4D Reamer rentals, DRinks rented one and did his recently. I've rented a couple throaters from them, good people to deal with.
