PSE Crossbow?
« on: October 25, 2006, 02:57:56 AM »
Guys, I am trying to learn about crossbows, now that I have a place to hunt that allows bow hunting only.  I generally use my old PSE compound, but have been interested in crossbows for a while.  In Tx we can only use them in the general firearms season, unless we have a doctors note explaining an upper body handicap,  etc...

Anyway,  The local  Academy Sporting Goods store has a package with a PSE crossbow with everything included for $318.00.  It comes with 165# pull, 6 bolts, 3 dot red dot sight, quiver etc.. with a composite camo'ed stock.   Seems like everything a beginner would need to learn on and hunt with.  Is anyone familiar with PSE crossbows?   Does that price sound good?   Thanks..

That price is comparable with a Horton Package. I am not familular with PSE xbows maybe some one else can help ya there. Most of the Xbow talk I see on the web is Either Xcaliber (What I shoot) Ten Point or Horton. They seem to be the big three and the most reccomended.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

I would stick with a crossbow manufacturer not a bow company that makes crossbows on the side. Excalibur, Tenpoint, Horton or Barnett come to mind. decent xbows with companies that stand behind them. Go to a pro shop that carries them, shoot them, see which you like and is comfortable. You get what you pay for and there are some stinkers out there that'll turn you off crossbows.

I am having a hard time in my area finding a shop that sells and or services crossbows.  There  are a good number of bow shops, but so far they seem to either be indifferent to or are negative towards Xbows.   I'm not sure that Xbows are a side job for PSE.  I will check into it, but they have been making some mighty fine compound bows for many years.  I've hunted with one for a good while now and it is a good bow.  Thats why this package caught my eye. Thanks for your comments.

PSE is  a great compound bowmaker but some of their attempts at crossbows fell short, the   Foxfire come to mind heavy triggers for one and  under powered. The new Viper looks good. Ten Point made some PSE xbows for a while.
Check the  Tenpoint forum for info on them, and check the Excalibur forum for info for any hunting questions and their Traders page.
Thats a good price your getting, but try shooting the xbow before you put down your money .
