Meat Sled?
« on: October 26, 2006, 12:23:48 AM »
Hi All,

So many of you talk about hualing a meat sled?  What do your sleds look like?  I'm trying to get an idea to what I need to make.  Thanks for the advice.

Ron

Can't wait to see some pictures on this. I have a Bass Pro 2 wheel came cart & I was thinking about bolting a receiver on it to attach to the ATV.
Will hunt for food.

If you need more than the inexpensive vacuum formed lightweight sleds, the best sleds are the ones you can make quite easily from 1/4" Polyethylene sheet. Normally you can buy 8 and 10 foot lengths so get what you want in whatever width you want - up to 4 (standard) and sometimes 5 feet. 32" is usually more tha wide enough and narrower is often better. You can either roll the edges up to create sides or attach them separately. If you need runners to take some of the abuse of the trail, you can attach 1/2" UHMW to the bottom in strips. The sled material can be ordinary HDPE for fairly light use or UHMW for really tough use. Make sure you store plastic sleds out of the sun after the season especially if it isn't treated to resist UV.

Golsovia where do you purchase the 1/4" polyethylene from? Also what does UHMW stand for or would they know what I'm asking for? How do you attach? Glue or bolts with locking nut?

you should be able to get 1/4 plastic sheet from your local farm store. if they carry those lightweight metal cattle grain feeders with the black plastic bottoms. the bottoms are just a sheet of very tuff plastic, just see if they will sell you a replacement bottom sheet.

This is more of a snow sled and or wet muddy conditions as shown. They call it an "otter sled". They make them up here in Minnesota.

I would nor drag it dry thru the woods though, over rocks and or logs and stuff. I am working on an old Pinto axle I'm hoping to attach it to in a few weeks.

Has anybody seen one in aluminum?  What is the max weight capacity for a sled in plastic?  Thanks

Ron
