LGS has two new Handi's in - 45/70 & 500 S & W

45/70 has rear peep sight and globe front with a schnabel forend.  $315 + tax.

500 S & W has flourescent open sights...$215 + tax.

both would be cool for different respective reasons. in my opinion the 500 sw is just a cool round (just interests me for some reason) and the 45/70 is a classic cartridge with a ton of history. i would however opt for the 45/120, but that is just my two cents

Agreed....THAT would be a serious pounding to the body from a 120 sized case.

It's not that bad!! A little weight in the stock and a Galco pad, and my .45-120 BC is a pussy cat! 555gr bullets at 1800fps are fun with a healthy dose of H4895 or 5744.

i have always wanted a 45 120 because my grandpa always told me about people killing a lot of buffalo with them at long ranges, just always sounded cool to me.

In reallity, the .45-120 was introduced after most of the bison were already gone.

Agreed, I remember reading that most of the bison were shot with such unglamorous rounds as the 50-70.  Lots of low cost military surplus rifles ended up in settlers hands.  Professional hunters may have mainly used rifles in other calibers however.

i could understand how more stories may have been written or told about the 120 since it is a more "glamorous" cartridge.  much like a 22-250 compared to a 223 perhaps? just a thought

that is what i meant by glamorous.  i would imagine they had the same discusions about the 45 70 and the 45 120 that we now have over the 223 and the 223 wssm.   but yes same principle.
