any 9,3 x 64 shooters here?
« on: October 27, 2006, 12:26:44 PM »
Am having one built on a 1909 Arg. action. share with me your bullet choices for shooting big game and how well did those bullets hold and up to what ranges. Seems the TUG by Brenneke has good and bad from what little I have heard. Realistically what is the maximum range that this would have over the 62?

I am having one built irregardless of popularity in the U.S.--seems quite overlooked but......very effecient. Fits in a standard action, beltless  but needs a bit of work or just replace the mag with a 2pc SunnyHill for shooting the big Barnes.

thanks,

If i was still shooting a 9.3 today, it would be loaded with 286 grain NP's....  In fact, i'm thinking of loading some up for my 9.3x74R double...

Hard to beat the NP's for sure. Mike has the 250's and 286 in stock over at NorthFork. Barnes and Woodleigh are sure well designed. Few others that are not at the top of my head. Think Speer makes one. So these are still good selections. I like the idea the a metric will compliment the 1909 and is beltless with comparable down range effect as the venerable H&H. Tough to find a bullet that is cheap for practice. Privi perhaps.

The 270gr speer is actually quite cheap but a little too soft for big game.  I shot a moosein the neck with one out of my 9.3x62 and it didn't exit, found lots of shrapnel in the neck meat.  I only shoot the 286gr partition any more.  Great bullet and locally available.

TB_78,

shooting any moose in the neck with all that bone and muscle will for the most part in rut if you will require a tough bullet to hold up. Of course them CNS shots are no doubt the best providing you are in close enough-but that is the problem, will the bullet hold up even though it will kill. Now on the other hand if you chose to shoot them in the lungs with that speer and good chance of the moose not going very far if at all. That frontal area of a .366" when it mushrooms in the boiler room is going to down your target. Big and heavy is pretty neat to see hammer them down.

After seeing thier performance on that moose and on a few whitetails I seriously wouldn't consider it a moose/bear worthy bulllet.  Especially not up close where the velosity is still way up.  I don't think the 270gr speer would punch thru the shoulder of a moose without breaking up too much for reliable penetration.  The 286gr partition on the other hand I have always gotten an exit from and wouldn't think twice about shooting anything in alaska with it including the biggest moose or brown bears.

Hmmm perhaps the 270 Grn Speer was designed wiht the 9.3x57mm in mind.

Edit:- Whoops that should have been 270 grain of course  :-[

wonder if that bullet maker I talked to down in Juneau I think it is that owns the Kodiak bullet makes a .366"? Those bullets mushroom good. I use them in my .33 calibers at most times  and did in my .45-70 and think they are overlooked.
