myronman3,

I noticed in your profile that your in Birchwood Wi. I used to live in Northern Illinois and over the last 20 or so years, I spent a lot of time in Birchwood. I moved here to Penn in 1996.

I was in Birchwood last summer and likly will be thier this spring to do some fishing. My long time  friend has a place on Big Chetec just off of F thats why I know alot about the area. I have fished, ice fished and snowmobiled quite a bit in your area and up thru Hayward  , Cable and over to Mercer in Iron County.

I still own a place of my own on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage just out side Mercer Wi. Don't get thier very much being its 1,200 miles from here in Penn.

Just thought I would mention it. Not very often I see folks from that part of the country here or on the other sites.

By the way, back to your question, I try as best I can to keep up with things going on in the North Woods. But I have not seen any info on this hog. I know Owen/Withee area   (between Eau Clair & Wausau) and just north a few miles is the begining of the Chequamegon National Forest. If that hog ever gets in thier, it could be a real hide & seek game trying to find him. Not to mention, he would likly become dinner for a good size bear in that area.

Good Luck

perhaps y'all didnt understand what i meant to say.   when i typed 'boar' i was using the word in the plural context.   actually, about 130-160 animals escaped from a farm that was raising these russian wild boar.   and from what i understand about their breeding habits, in the years they have been free range-ing they should have a good population established.  i hear they have been quite successful at surviving, or should i say, thriving.   i really want a piece of this action.

cabin 4.  nice to hear from you.   it is a beautiful area for sure.  i have lived all over the states and love the land of wisconsin (hate the political mess here though).   my only complaint is a lack of big game hunting options.   deer and bear, although it can take up to 6 years to draw a bear kill tag.  i am on year 2.   i really want some action.   might have to travel out of state this coming winter; although with the boy and the new one on the way,  that might get pushed back even further.    i apoligize for the lack of my typing skills.   on the forums, i try to not look like an un educated putz but i do get lazy typing.   late boys.

myronman3,

I know what you mean about the lack of big game opportunities in the upper mid-west. Living here in PA is a dream come true froma big game perspective. We got tons and tons of deer. Our total deer harvest runs around 500,000 per year. Thats a BIG harvest. Most counties here can't get rid of enough doe tags. As far as bear, all you ahve to do is a buy a bear stamp for around $25 and its the first 3 days of the rifle deer season. Usually we bag around 1,500 bear in those 3 days. Not bad for state that is far chase only. We even have a few preserves that have the hogs and other exotics.

One thing I do mis is the duck hunting on the Missisippi. We don't got the big river here nor my hunting crew from Savanna Il.

If you ever want to come out this way, let me know. I am going to northern MAine for a week of black bear this fall. This will be my second trip to MAine in 3 years and my hope is to get my second and the biggin this time.

Well gotta go. Maybe I will see you at the Big Ol Blue Gill Fesitival in Birchwood this summer. A little bit of that and then its off to the stck car races down in Rice Lake.

Myronman, a few years ago we heard that one, too.  We traveled from the Green Bay area and tried to locate some pigs, actullay did some door to door investigating....  It turned out to be mostly bar talk.  Seems that there was a farm that lost some pigs, and I guess they even had some litters.  But the locals started killing them, the DNR wardens in the area kept at it too.  It didn't take long for them to get pretty shot up.  Nobody has seen any more since 1998.  It sure would be nice though, eh?? :D

cabin 4     you get over here for the bluegill festival, give me a holler in advance.  maybe we can get together for a cup of mud one morning.

jeffg   well, my mother lives in the area there and her guy-friend is a farmer in the area they escaped.  they say there are still plenty of boar running loose, but are a little west of his property (he says they are in the black river bottoms).   i met a guy at work the other day who works over that way and it seems one of his co-workers is into hunting them.  and by the way he talked, this fella did it quite often.   unfortunatly, i havent met the guy who actually hunted them, yet.   i am working every angle on this one and if i find anything more out i will p.m. you.   boy, it sure would be nice!

ahunter55,

We have a camper at Fin & Feather Campground which is on Riverview rd on Pool 13 just about 1/4 mile north of the South Sabula Access. This is on the Illinois side. The area we hunt, and we have 3 blinds is just south of the Spring Lake refuse area. One of our blinds is a "water blind" just a couple hundred yards from the dyke of Spring Lake, the other is near the main river channel and the third is on an island just inside the backwater of 13.

Yes, I would like to do a video. I do plan on being thier this coming November. I will talk to my hunting partner (Mike) to see what he thinks of the idea. We have all the equipment needed and know how to call. If the ducks and or geese cooperate, it could be a great video.

I will let you know soon after I talk to Mike and thanks for the offer.

well i'll tell ya.   i just flat out aint had time to follow up on anything.   my boy is getting more mobile with every day and my wife is about ready to burst with our second.   dont hold your breath on new info from me anytime within the next few months;  cause i am all but tied up with other obligations.    i would be doing great just to get to the range,  which i havent had time to do either (and even if i did, the rain is holding that up).    so i guess all i have to say is that if you dont understand,  you havent been there,  yet.   but the good news is that in 2 1/2 more years i will be able to start teaching my first all about this stuff.

In todays Wis. State Journal, there was a story, With pics. of a small wild boar population in the Gays Mills area in south west wisconsin. didn't say how many there are, but anyone with a small game license can hunt them.
