semi custom Raging Bull 500 S&W

I am looking into a custom / semi custom 500, maybe a Linebaugh or S&W, the going price of a custom is $1500 for your pistol plus work and $2500 for their stretch frame VS about $1000 for a RB.
 can a bbl be cut down to 5.5 - 6", and then action be tuned, or is the internal parts too soft to be worked. I have heard of this problem on other taurus handguns but not sure of the RB.
 I am not necessarily a cheapskate, but I do want my money's worth.
