6.5 TCU
« on: October 30, 2006, 04:25:56 AM »
Anyone loading for the 6.5 TCU?  I have sorta gotten the cart before the horse...I found some 6.5 TCU Hornady dies marked way down at Graf & Sons..so I bought them and started assembling some loads with the components and powder I had on hand.  Hope Santa brings me a barrel!
Any thoughts would be appreciated..

I have a 10" 6.5mm TCU if you're looking for that length.

I load for a 10" barrel.  120 grain home grown hollowpoints and VVN133 powder.  Shoots better than I do.

I have been doing some reading on this cartridge. From what I've read, from a hand gun it is an extremly accurate round (just like the 6.5 x 55 Swede) and the recoil is mild.

It is suppose to be an excellent whitetail load out to a maximum of about 250 yards, which here in Pa, is probably longer than most shots I've ever had the chance to take.

I think this is a barrel that can go on the Contender (handgun) which makes it even more attractive.

I've got a Virgin Valley 11" 6.5tcu barrel.  I'm getting around 2000 fps with a 120 grain bullet an it seems to like IMR3031 powder and Sierra bullets best but there are lots more I haven't tried yet.

Youse guyse that whats ownes the barrels.....what kind of groups do you get at what kind of yards?  You know....do you get like 2" groups at 100 yards....or like 15" groups at 25 yards  ;D?

I'm down to only one handgun barrel for my Contender. (that's the 45-410). I use the 410 in the spring to shoot Starlings for target practice. Starlings are like insurance agents, when you get rid of one, 10 more show up to take it's place.  ;D!

But, from what I've read the 6.5 TCU looks to be an excellent cartridge. I've also read teh 7mmTCU is another good one, but with a little more recoil. But I think where I hunt, the 6.5 will be more than adequate.

Dave.

I had a 10" and a 14" (both stock TC barrels) used for IHMSA silhouette shooting. Both would shoot under 1" at 100 yds from the bench with a 4X scope. The 10" liked IMR 4198 and the 14" shot best with IMR 4895. Both would shoot best with the Hornady
129 SP. Niether would stabilize the 140 grain bullet. All 140's were "tipped" going into the target. The recoil is very mild and I never
lost a target with a good hit ...(after the over-hang ruile went into place.) Back then you could only use Iron sights, but knowing how well both barrels shot was a real confidence builder. Targets were placed at 50,100,150 and 200 meters. You could do a lot worst than a TC barrel in 6.5 TCU...............good luck and good shooting....................DON    :)
