Young hunter takes a bull elk
« on: October 30, 2006, 11:44:10 AM »

This photo was recently taken by a proud father.  The young hunter took this respectable bull with a neck shot after a long stalk.

30-30 is a keeper!

It's a good thing that young man didn't know that any caliber less than a .338 Win Mag just bounces off elk!  ;D

Someone should have told him that elk are bullet proof when it comes to the low 30-30 cartridge  ::)

What makes it work is the "long stalk" referred to in the original post.  Shows dad and son are good hunters, who recognized the need to get the proper range to kill that nice bull.  Many folks never get any closer than 300 yards and then one of the magnums is needed.

Congratulations on the good hunt, and on training another generation of good hunters!

Congratulations to the young hunter, You can tell by the grin on his face he will be back the first chance he gets to repeat the great feeling he is having now. What difference does it make whose ancestor this bull came from. Again Congratulations to the young man and hope he gets to go again real soon.......Joe.........

In my part of Texas the deer are quite a bit bigger that the ones in S. Texas. In Illinois the deer are quite a bit darker in color than the ones in Texas. In the panhandle the whitetail and muleys sometimes mix.
The boy's daddy said he shot an elk with a 3030, and it would appear that he did. He didn't sat where (location) just that he did. I say congratulations to the boy and the 3030. The boy made a good shot, and the 3030 proved that you don't need a magnum to punch thru to the kill zone. Just patience, steadiness, and some stalking skill. ;)JMO

Its great to see our youth hunting! My kids love to go hunting both my petite lil girl and my son that is in the military. They have shot whitetails with bow and gun here in MN. Bears with rifle here in MN. Hogs and exotics with bow in texas. Its all fun. Dad has spent alot of time and money hunting with his kids and it shows in the relationship we have now that they are teens. I'd love to see more fathers taking their kids hunting, whether at game farms or in the wild. I'd also like to see more landowners letting our youth hunt on there lands. They are the future of our sport.

dang Skunk ... you went and said it better than I could have. To hear my son tell others how he got a 225lb Russian boar hunting in Tennessee on our first hog hunt gives me goose bumps. It made a beautiful shoulder mount too.

Congratulations young man.

Enough with the name calling, that's not allowed on GBO and a good way to get a vacation from the forum.

I'm not as nice as Tim, I dumped all the name calling post I could find.  They are in the trash can now and Bill can look them over later and decide who of you are going to take a time out.

If you want to have a discussion on High fence hunting take it to an approriate forum.  Other wise it topic drift that's sole purpose to flame.

I am now going to go back through the entire thread and dump those post that are flame/topic dirft.  I am  not going to send any one any nice little notes saying you have been deleted and I am not going edit the bad parts, there is just many. I am just going to delete.
