22 Hornet superlight 1 payday away
« on: October 30, 2006, 12:49:10 PM »
So next pay the new superlight 22 hornet comes home. The first thing to decide is for the first test drive I need some factory ammo. Because I have got 4 deer tags to pay for this month so I am limited to what I can buy.

I am thinking I can get 50 rounds for the initial test drive. This test drive would be a sight-in, a little practice and a coyote or 2. The ammo I have available is the standard Winchester, Remington and Hornady. At this point I am leaning to Winchester for two reasons the big one is that the bulk brass I'll be buying later will be Winchester, and I am leary of using the small 35 gr v-max on a coyote.

What ammo would you buy

Because of weight considerations (because it is really for my boys to use as a centerfire trainer) I will keep it with iron sights. But how do I sight it in if it was scoped I would sight in dead on at 25 then move out to 100 and get it so it was 1.5-2  inches high. In this case would I just sight dead on @ 100.  Also if the gun was scoped I would be hoping for a 3 shot 100 yard group under 1.5, with the v-notch should I expect someting more in the line of 3". I expect to upgrade the sights to a peep because in the spring when it's being used for ground squirrels the v-notch may not be up to the task.

Alright sounds good!Since you want to use winchester brass,I'd get a box of winchester so after you shoot them up,you can use those fifty cases to work up loads and be good to go when you buy the bulk brass.
I always liked the 40gr nosler bt and 40gr hornady vmax. Also shot the 45gr hornet hornady bullet, they all do good on varmints.Best powders in mine were ww296 and hogdon lil gun.
Can't help you on the open sights as never tried them with these old eyes.I put a 2-7 scope on mine and like it.Always sighted in about an inch to inch and half at 100yards,with those bullets have shot groundhogs to close to 190-200 and did fine.

Im using 45gr Wincheter HP in my Superlight.  With open sights I can consistently hit a 4" circle at 50 yards.  Im going to put a scope on it just to see what I can get out of it, but its primarily a truck gun.  You will like that little gun so much you will want to sleep with it! ;D

I am no 22Hornet expert, nor do I own one as of yet. But I seem to remember reading that Remington brass was able to hold just a hair more powder and a little stronger/harder of brass too..which I have always found Reminton brass to be..
I could be wrong....

That is something to consider, even just to do a side by side comparison, for when I start loading. I'll have to check around for what I can actually get in bulk brass, locally most of the rifle brass seems to be winchester, but I'll check.
