looking for a side arm for deer/bear/elk hunting 44mag for availibility and i like the caliber i would like to hear what you guys think. superdown

id buy a moutain gun. The titanium guns are good to carry but to light for comfortably shooting heavy loads and to me anyway are hard to shoot off hand being that light.

Go for the Mountain Gun. It is full sized with a full N-frame, but fairly lightweight, comfortable to carry and shoot. Mine likes 300 gn swcs over a stiff enough charge of H110/WW296. Recoil is manageable and not all that bad. I'm not so sure you could say the same about the 329. HTH. Mikey.

I have a PD 629 and a 629. They look about the same except 1 is black and 1 is silver. 1 of them is fun to shoot and the other is not, but the bad one to shoot is alot nicer to carry. If your carring the gun for back up the PD would be my choice. If it`s to be your main gun I would go with the 629.

I was looking at the same choice a couple months ago. Came across a 629pd that had been traded in, supposedly fired (and looked like it) 1 box of shells. That might say something right there. Or a 625 mountain gun in 45 Colt. They were within 20.00 of each other. I wanted a gun to carry out west while elk hunting, especially since I was going to be carrying a muzzleloader. After thinking about it a couple of days, I bought the mountain gun. Glad I did. I would recommend the mountain gun.

thank you for the feed back think i wll be getting the mountain gun but i noticed a couple of folks were talking about a 629pd not 329pd i double checked the smith web site and list it as the 329pd as did all the gun shops i went to am i missing something just curios thankx superdown

I agree with Lloyd. The 329PD is only for self defense; way too light for a session at the range - unless you're into pain; then it would be perfect.

There is no 629PD listed on the S&W website. The mountain gun will be a more practical sidearm.

The PD is OK if the plan is to use it once or twice in a lifetime to save your butt.

Aside from that, stick with the mountain guns. Want a clue as to how rough they can be to shoot? Take a look at all of the 99% used ones for sale.

I've got a MG in 44 mag & 45 Colt each - they're great.

Everyone I know that has a 329PD says it's a great carry gun, as long as it's loaded with .44 SPECIALS. If I ever got one, it would be just that—a .44 Sp. However, those with the Mountain Guns really seem to like them. If I were going to buy another .44, it would be a Mountain Gun. (Do they make it in .41?)

They did make some mountain guns in 41 mag and blued steel. A dealer in this area had (still might) have one for sale.

Don`t know why everyone is appolidizing, I`m the goof ball the started the screw up. But then I`m always turning around number and names.They say it`s a sign of old age and if so I matured very young.

I have both 629 Mt Pistol and a 329 PD. Also have a 625 .45 Colt Mt Pistol. I'm lucky -- get to shoot 5 to 7 days a week. I'll usually run a couple of cylinders full of .44 Mag loads (23gr H110, 250gr Keith Leadheads) thu the 329 every time I go out. That's plenty for me. It actually makes the wrist sore. Had some work being done on the 329 and used the 629 MP for about 3 weeks. The 629 MP has noticibly less recoil -- no sore wrist. I shoot 250gr cast at about 900 fps thru the 625 .45 colt -- it is actually fun. Don't get me wrong the others are fun too, just in a different way. With all that said, unless you can shoot the 329 frequently (one or two cyl full three times a week or more), get the 629 Mt Pistol. I'm out in the woods 5 to 7 days a week and the 329 is my everyday gun -- the light weight makes all the difference to me. I live in Montana, so the .44 Mag is warranted. If I lived somewhere other than the Northern Rocky Mountain west, I'd probably carry a 3" M60 full lug with adj sights. Here is a 25 yd offhand group with full mag loads in the 329. They will shoot, but you need to keep up the practice.

whats a good price on a used 629mg ? ive got $500 i can spend was looking on gun broker and auction arms ,guns america only found new ones at around $575 or there about give or take a little.

Mine was $425 if I recall for a 629-3 about a 1-1/2 years ago in around 95-97% condition.

I chose the 629-4 Mountain Gun. Shoot it with 21 gr. of 2400 under a 240 gr. Keith swc builet. Works good for me.

Yes, the 657 Mountain Gun and there is the 357?

I have a 329 and like it alot. But I could be persuaded to part with it if anyone is interested but not cuz it is too rough but because I am scheming on a Freedom Arms 454.

Between $500 and $600, depending on condition and accessories that come with it..
