S.Sumner,
Not sure if this will help or not, but it's a start.

Now that I have figured out how to add pictures, I will do a pencil
and paper rubbing of the crest to see if anyone has ever encountered one
like it. It is on a Mauser 98 short rifle (that is all I can describe it as because it is different
from a K98) It has an adapter to allow a Spanish 95 bayonet to be fixed to it.
and the crest has an Ax that the handle is a bundle of reeds. crossed by a short double edge sword.
I have been told by two different people that it was Italian. It is an 8mm mauser caliber
that is marked 7.92 Cal. in script letters though. They told me that it was created for the Italian Contingent that was sent to the Spanish civil war and was extremely rare. I can find nothing other than word of mouth stuff though. I want some more substantial evidence.

I just recieved an e-mail from an authority on Italian weapons.
This is what he said also.

"The symbol for the Italian Fascists was the Fascio, which is a bundle of sticks/rods and an axe.  It is borrowed from the Roman Empire's symbol of imperial authority, the Fasces, as the Fascist borrowed very heavily from the Roman Empire."

I guess we were pretty close to being right.
