New No 1 - Some questions...
« on: November 01, 2006, 01:30:37 PM »
Just picked up my new No 1 RSI 7x57, and as this is my first falling block, or single shot of any kind for that matter, I had a question regarding the gun.

When the gun is loaded you can see the cartridge rim through the top of the action and the falling block wiggles, just a little bit of play, front and back. Is this normal for this design? Not being familiar with the design, I assumed the block would seal at the top against the breech, but maybe not?

Thanks,

Ben

I have three No. 3's.  All are rimmed.  The top edge of the rim is visible in all of them when the block is up and it is ready to fire.  I have not noticed any play in the block when it is closed.

Benny...

My 1981 RSI in 7x57 has a tiny bit of front-to-back play in the breech block when the rifle is COCKED, but no play when the rifle is uncocked.

I.E., once you pull the trigger, there's no play in the breech block at all... and the action on my rifle is far from being "shot out", so I doubt that anything is wrong with your new rifle.

If your rifle lacked the tolerances to allow just a bit of wiggle, closing the lever might be a bit stiff or even difficult. These rifles can be just a bit more finicky than a bolt gun in that cartrdiges chamber more easily if they are adequately sized as most factory ammo is. I would rather be able to drop a cartridge into the chamber - especially when the rifle is scoped- and not have to worry about nudging it to get it adequately inserted seated to close the block. Mine are plenty accurate even when they seat easily.

I hope you like your rifle. Mine took a bit to grow on me, but I'm really beginning to appreciate and understand the oft claimed fondness for the Ruger #1.

Excellent choice of rifle!  I have a No. 1-A in 7x57, and it's one of my favorite deer rifles.  I mounted a Leupold fixed 6x42 on the rifle, and it will average just over an inch at 100 yards.  My block also has the slightest wiggle, so it doesn't sound like anything to get too concerned with.
