Bearcat, Single Six or Uberti Stallion
« on: November 02, 2006, 09:26:36 AM »
This is my first post for this site.  I have been lurking for awhile and have learned alot.  I am currently looking into a single action .22 for plinking and carrying in a holster during small game hunting, woods walking, fishing, etc.  It will probably be used for periodic squirrel hunting.  I know it really comes down to how it feels to me and I have not seriously compared them in person yet.  I am looking for some general impressions.  The single six would most likely be the blued 4 5/8" barrel.  I like the compactness/lightness of the bearcat, the adjustable sights on the single six and the case hardened frame of the Uberti.  Is the accuracy of the bearcat comparable to the single six?  Does anyone have any experience with the Uberti?

Thanks

Accuracy, durability, handiness, sights, size, weight.  Winner- Single Six w/dual cylinders, a lifetime investment.  Mine is equally accurate with the mag cylinder.  Beretta, have never heard comment on their accuracy.  Who knows?  Bearcat, cute but very hard to hold.  Inconsistant practical accuracy.

well I own both the bearcat and the single six (6.5 bbl), and i prefer the bearcat for what you are descibing. Its small size is great for a pack gun. Accuracy is great on the six and good on the bearcat, tho on the latter it does take some getting used to, but good. the plus side of the six is if you want a scope on it, you can mount one easily, and then the thing is just silly accurate. Cant speak on the uberti, tho a nice looking gun.

best bet is play with all of em, find someone who owns them if you can and shoot em. both rugers have made me happy.

good luck

Dave

I realy love my Bearcat, it's plenty accuret for small game at short ranges and is very easy to shoot, but if I could only have one SA 22, it would be the single six with both cylenders and  a 4&5/8 in bbl.  My personal preference is for fixed sights and that's what I would have, but the adjustable sights are better if you are going to use several diferend brands of ammo, as long as you can stand the bulky looks of them spoling the clean lines of a great pistol.

I have both also and I have to agree; Single Six.  I like my bearcat, it's a light, fun and handy gun.  But when I want to go hunting, the single six gets the nod.  The sights are a little easier to see for these 'old eyes' and I love the handyness of it's 4 5/8 barrel.  As for adjustable sights, I never had to move them when I got the gun and have never changed them since.  It seems to shoot to the same point of aim for all the usuall .22 loads whether Rem/Fed/Win h.p. or solids.  I have not tried any of the super light wt 'zapper' type loads.  I do most of my shooting at 25 and 40 yards, I can't speak for the sight settings at 100 yds.  My eyes don't allow precision shooting of open sights at that range anymore.  I do have a couple of other .22s that get lots of range time.  One is a H&R break top but we won't talk about that on one the single action forum.  The other is a full sized Bounty Hunter 6 shot with a 6 1/2" barrel.  It's definately not as light and handy as the Single Six but talk about fun to shoot!  Especially as the ranges begin to stretch a little.  Being full size in a .22 it doesn't move at all when it goes off and is very accurate at my 40 yd target.  Being fixed sights, I had to file down the front sight to get it to shoot where I wanted but now it even shoots the .22 mags to the same point of aim at 40 yds.  Fun!  44 Man

single six hands down is the best bang for the buck in a .22 and the most versitle .22 out there.

One more vote for the Single Six however, the 4 5/8" barrel will have a much shorter sight radius than the 6 1/2". This will ultimately give you less chance at that hunting accuracy you're looking for. Both barrel lengths are fine for their particular applications but you'll be glad you went with the 6 1/2" for hunting. I have rather large hands and the Bearcat resembles something that belongs on a keychain as opposed to being in a holster. Just my opinion.

Buy both.

The Single Six is a little more practical. It has the full size Blackhawk grip. That makes it easier for most of us to shoot. The Bearcat has a rather small grip and it is fairly light at about 24 oz. That makes it very sensitive to variation in grip.

I prefer adjustable sights. The Single Six has the same adjustable sights as the Blackhawk. The Bearcat has a rather narrow notch in the frame and a narrow front blade. I have had to widen the notch in the frame on my Bearcats to be able to see the sights properly.

Bottom line, I can shoot my Bearcat nearly as well as my Single Six, but I have to work harder at it.

Bearcat!  I like both the single six and the bearcat but my bearcat is a great little packin gun shoots well enought for rabbits and squirells around 25 yards or so, pretty nice simple little revolver.  It does take some practice though, but its fun practice.
