Chokes and smoothbore accuracy
« on: November 03, 2006, 02:52:33 AM »
What are your opinions about the accuracy of old-fashioned Foster slugs in various chokes? Is one choke better than another? What about straight cylinder? Almost all smoothbore slug barrels come from the factory with an IC choke. Thanks!

I have found that modified and rifled choke tubes work best for me with the cheap Winchester slugs. The rifled tube groups a little tighter for some reason.

I think it must also depend on the type of shotgun. My BPS shoots slugs the best through a modified choke. My Model 12's do the best with a full choke.  ???

My old 12 gauge Browning A5 with mod. choke shot slugs great. It could shoot right on, with the bead front sight out to 70 yards.
I wish I never sold that one!

I have an 1100, with a 22 inch rifle sighted barrel and screw in chokes. I find the modified choke will shoot a 1 1/2" group at fifty yards shooting a Federal Maximum 1 oz hollowpoint. I found this out by accident.
I don't like scopes on squirrel rifles, but at 57 I don't see like I did. I decided to cheat with a shotgun. I also live in hog country, and it is not uncommon to run into 14 or 15 at a time. They run in size from piglets to around 450lbs, some bigger, but I haven't killed any that big. I have never found them hard to kill, but I have found that a boar in heavy brush that is cornered or thinks he's cornered, will fight. A sow with babies is quicker to fight, and both are in it to win. I wanted a combo squirrel-hog gun. I have owned this rig for years but kept it in a peterbilt in a case and fired it very little. Boy, was I surprised. It has a 7 round extension so I load the first 5 with the slugs and the first two up birdshot. Now I can hit squirrels again and the problem with accidently makin a big hog mad is a good thing. In fact, I don't think North America offers anything this rig won't stop out to 50 yards or a little more. Do you?
