TC .58 Bigboar loads
« on: November 03, 2006, 04:41:53 AM »
I am running low on the Hornady Great Plains 525 grain bullets for my Bigboar, only three left. These are very accurate bullets and effective on deer. My plan is to use up my other inventory which include 505 grain Buffalo and 58 cal sabots for .452 pistol bullets. I have large quantities of cast and jacketed .452 bullets and want to try them. I just need to find some loading specs for these 58/.452 sabots and need help. I am using cleanshot powder. Has anyone tried sabots for the 58 or has any links for loading info. Thank you in advance for any help.

Wouldn't this question be better put on the modern forum? Deer don't need more than 60-75 grains of real powder behind a patched ball in a .58 cal. Those 525 grain bullets will shoot through an elk lengthwise.

Just food for thought as a possible alternative.

A .58cal Hornady (or Speer) .570/279grn lead ball with TC's .018" prelubed patches is an extremely, extremely accurate .58cal projectile and devastating on deer, elk, etc...have shot completely through every deer I've taken with them and that's just using a mid range powder charge of 100grns 2F...only cost about 20-25% of an equivalent number of those huge conicals...and have comparitively very little recoil, etc...

My TC bigboar is a traditional black powder rifle so that is why I posted here.  I did not consider posting in the "modern in line" forum since my gun is not an " in line". The powder I use is very real. I guess I am stuck between all modern and all traditional with no place to go.

Thanks for trying to help Crowhop. I also looked all over the internet with no luck. I may guesstamate a powder charge of 120 grains behind the sabot with a home made 310 grain cast .452 pistol bullet I use in my Blackhawk.

Maybe try a smaller charge and work up.Seems like load data for 58 and 54 cals are hard to find.

I don't think the rifle will stabilize the sabot very well.  The bullet needs more than a 1:48 twist I would thinnk.  I load my 58 with 120 grains of 2f and a 58 caliber ball. It worked well.
