Fall Turkey Tactics
« on: November 03, 2006, 10:41:49 AM »
Well the Fall Season here in California opens a week from now and while I know enough to  have had some chances in the Spring I'm at a loss as to how to hunt Turkeys in the fall.  I hunt public ground and so hunting pressure (at least in the Spring) is very high and the birds can be tough.  What types of calling or tactics do you guys use on fall turkeys (either sex can be taken).

Should I hunt them like Elk? (Get on them and stay on them and try to get close enough for a shot?)  What about decoys?

Fall is a whole different ballgame than spring.
In thefall, I will set up near a roosting area if I can find it---just like spring, I know.  I don't like decoys in the fall though.
I'll try to set up near a roosting area and give some real mild calls at daylight or just after they come down.  Nothing too much, just enough to possibly pull the flock my way.
If they fly down and are just out of reach, then i'll try to bust up the flock  and recall them in later.  This seems to work best right after they've come out the roost, not at noon or anything.
If that doesn't work, I cover alot of ground and periodically call. Eventually I seem to hear some turkeys and then just prefer to lightly try to call them my way. I'm not targeting one particular bird like in spring, but just 1-2 to pull away to get a shot. In the fall, with time limits due to bow hunting, deer gun hunting prep, etc, any turkey is fair game.  They all taste the same  ;D
I'm pretty non-aggressive, even in the fall. If you have an idea of a roosting area, you're 90% there.
